What they are saying

From Chief Justice John Roberts' majority opinion: "Before Brown (vs. Board of Education), schoolchildren were told where they could and could not go to school based on the color of their skin. The school districts in these cases have not carried the heavy burden of demonstrating that we should allow this once again - even for very different reasons. ... The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race." From Justice Stephen Breyer's dissent: "The last half-century has witnessed great strides toward racial equality, but we have not yet realized the promise of Brown. ... This is a decision that the Court and the Nation will come to regret." Pinellas School Board vice chairperson Nancy Bostock, referring to the district's new student assignment plan: "The best news is the decision doesn't set us back with what's on the table so far." Hillsborough School Board chairman Jack Lamb: "Schools only can do so much. Unless society makes some changes, the end result is going to be more racially identifiable schools."
