Seven of the 15 applicants for U.S. attorney will be interviewed for the job, the head of the state's nominating committee said Friday.
Finalists for the $145, 000-a-year position include four current assistant U.S. attorneys: Dennis Moore and Adelaide Gonzalez Few with the Tampa office; Cynthia Hawkins with the Orlando office; and F.T. "Frank" Williams with the Gainesville office.
Two candidates are former federal prosecutors, Latour "LT" Lafferty and Ken Lawson. Lafferty is now with Tampa firm Fowler White. Lawson is a consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton.
The remaining candidate, A. Brian Albritton, is a criminal defense lawyer with Holland & Knight in Tampa.
Candidates will be interviewed by members of the nominating committee on July 10, said Michael Grindstaff, statewide chairman of the federal judicial nominating committee.
After the interviews, the committee will send three recommendations to Republican Sen. Mel Martinez. Martinez will consult with Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, and they will submit their top pick to the White House for approval.
The applicants are seeking to replace Paul Perez, who announced his retirement in March.
