Donations equip students with full backpacks

Monetary donations are needed for the annual Operation Backpack event, which will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place. The free annual event, sponsored by Friends of the Children Inc. and the city of Brooksville Recreation Department, provides backpacks filled with school supplies to area children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The goal is to provide more than 2, 000 free backpacks to children in the community. All donations are tax deductible. For information, call Mike Walker at 544-5495 or JoAnn Munford at 544-5498.

The Spring Hill Community Association will host the Spring Hill Idol contest during the Spring Hill 40th Birthday Celebration on Sept. 22 and 23 at the Lake House, 1202 Kenlake Ave. The contest is open to people ages 16 to 25; no professional singers may participate. Prizes will be awarded. The singing contest is open to the first 150 participants. Entry forms are available at Ackley Dental Group, 1530 Pinehurst Drive. Entry deadline is July 15. Youths can kick it at soccer camp
First Hernando Youth Soccer's annual Major League Soccer Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon July 16 to 20 at the soccer complex at Anderson Snow Park, 1360 Anderson Snow Road. A goalkeeper camp will also be offered from 5 to 7 p.m. July 17 to 19. Both camps are for youths ages 5 to 18. The cost is $92 for the soccer camp, $60 for the goalkeeper camp or $122 for both camps.
