Reaction to the commutation
Associated Press
Published July 3, 2007
"When it comes to the law, there should not be two sets of rules - one for President Bush and Vice President Cheney and another for the rest of America. Even Paris Hilton had to go to jail. No one in this administration should be above the law." Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill. "While for a long time I have urged a pardon for Scooter, I respect the president's decision. This will allow a good American, who has done a lot for his country, to resume his life." Former Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn. "Accountability has been in short supply in the Bush administration, and this commutation fits that pattern." Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. "President Bush did the right thing today in commuting the prison term for Scooter Libby. The prison sentence was overly harsh and the punishment did not fit the crime." House Republican Whip Roy Blunt of Missouri. "The Constitution gives President Bush the power to commute sentences, but history will judge him harshly for using that power to benefit his own vice president's chief of staff who was convicted of such a serious violation of law." Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. "The president said he would hold accountable anyone involved in the Valerie Plame leak case. By his action today, the president shows his word is not to be believed." House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

I think Herbert (above) is right about Bush keeping the threat of no-pardon, a pending noose, over Scooter's head so Scooter will not "get mad enough (while sitting in his cell) to tell the whole truth." We already know the whole truth: Dictatorship.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one,but if they try to steal the white house furniture on the way out. I'll be pissed off!

Do you think Bush thinks his popularity can't get any lower so why not pardon him? Or do you think Scooter knows too much to let him go to jail and risk making him mad enough to tell the whole truth. With this administration, it must be the latter.

Nothing that President Bush does should surprise anyone. He imagines himself as the first dictator of the U.S. A very dangerous man whom has his finger on the "Button". We would be much safer with President Putin of Russia as our President.

Republican politics at their finest. Lie under oath; impeach Clinton and yell about it for the next eight years, then commute Scooter's sentence. The "party of values" at its finest.
