  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Alcohol-buying sting ends with six clerks cited

Published July 4, 2007

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office used underage volunteers in an alcohol-buying sting Monday. The investigation went to stores in Dunedin, Safety Harbor, Palm Harbor and Oldsmar. Of the 24 stores that deputies visited, six sold to underage buyers. That's an improvement over previous stings, authorities said. Citations were issued to the following clerks: Paul Joginder, 69, of Discount Beverage at 414 Patricia Ave. in Dunedin; Matthew Antonelli, 20, of Quick Nicks at 840 Broadway Ave. in Dunedin; Shravan Banda, 20, of Super Shop at 1001 Broadway Ave. in Dunedin; Farouk Tawfik, 59, of Liberty Food Mart, 201 St. Petersburg Drive in Oldsmar; Jeffrey Bowen, 24, of 7-Eleven at 2495 Sandy Point Drive in Palm Harbor; and Alastair Wallace, 21, of BP Gas Station, 4060 Tampa Road in Oldsmar.

Man faces charges after shots fired

Monday night, the action was outside the Mugs 'N and Jugs restaurant at 14100 U.S. 19 N. Two men got into a heated argument. One of them, Kyle Chiappone, 21, grabbed a handgun and pointed it at the other one, according to the Largo Police Department. Chiappone then started shooting in the air and in the direction of the other man, police said. About eight shots were fired and no one was hurt. Chiappone, of St. Petersburg, was arrested on counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and attempted second degree murder. He was being held at the Pinellas County Jail without bail.

Man involved in fatal Ruskin crash

A Tarpon Springs man was involved in a car crash in Ruskin on Monday that killed a 29-year-old woman, the Florida Highway Patrol said. Christopher Parks, 51, was driving north on 15th Street SE at State Road 674, troopers said in a report. Parks pulled out in front of the vehicle driven by Narciso Medina Jr., 30, and the two vehicles collided at 4:47 p.m. , the report said. A passenger in Medina's car, Christie Gonzalez, was killed. Parks suffered minor injuries. Medina and one of his passengers, Adam Medina, 4, were taken to Tampa General Hospital, where Narciso Medina was in good condition Tuesday. Adam Medina was treated and released. An investigation was continuing, troopers said.

Help birds have a safe holiday too

This is a big holiday for boating and going to the beach, but Pinellas County Environmental Lands Division officials ask residents to remember the many threatened and endangered birds trying to nest on barrier islands and beaches. Many lost chicks and eggs to Tropical Storm Barry and are trying to nest again. Where nests are marked with posts and string, keep your distance to avoid flushing them from their nests, exposing eggs and chicks to the sun and predators. Keep dogs off islands that prohibit them during nesting season and on leashes where they are allowed.
