Cows catch a break at church dinner July 21

ISTACHATTA
New Hope United Methodist Church will have a "Cow Appreciation Dinner" at 6 p.m. July 21 at the church, 12725 S Istachatta Road off Lake Lindsey Road, north of Istachatta.
To show appreciation to cows, no beef will be served. The dinner will feature fish, pork and chicken dishes. There will also be an assortment of homemade side dishes and desserts.

HUDSON ARIPEKA ELKS TO HAVE DANCE, RIB DINNER
These events are planned at Aripeka Elks Lodge 2520 at 9135 Denton Ave.
-The Ladies of Aripeka Elks sponsor a country-western dance July 21. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Music will be provided by the Bendys. Tickets are $13.
-The Past Exalted Ruler's Association will have a country rib dinner July 28. Dinner will be from 3 to 6 p.m. and also will include pasta salad, baked beans, corn on the cob and dessert. Music will be provided by Marty and the Nice Guys from 3 to 6 p.m., followed by karaoke with Annie at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 if purchased in advance or $10 at the door.

SPRING HILL LOCAL HILLARY CLINTON SUPPORTERS TO MEET
A Hernando County Team Hillary group is being formed in support of Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign.
The first meeting will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 2 at the West Hernando/S.T. Foggia Branch Library, 6335 Blackbird Ave. Meetings will be on the first Thursday of each month.

BROOKSVILLE OPERATION BACKPACK NEEDS FINANCIAL HELP
Monetary donations are needed for the annual Operation Backpack event, which will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place.
The free annual event, sponsored by Friends of the Children Inc. and the city of Brooksville Recreation Department, provides backpacks filled with school supplies to area children in kindergarten through eighth grade.

SPRING HILL AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM CLASSES SET
AARP will conduct its Driver Safety Program classes at these locations in August:
-12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 8 and 15, Spring Hill Enrichment Center, 11375 Cortez Blvd. (behind Oak Hill Hospital). Call 686-7179.

The course, open to anyone age 50 and older, costs $10. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate to submit to their insurance company for a possible rate reduction. Class size is limited; call to register.
SPRING HILL CHURCH'S GIFT SHOP IS OPEN SECOND TUESDAY
United Church of Christ will open a gift shop from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at 4244 Mariner Blvd.

NEW PORT RICHEY PHCC STUDENT ART ON DISPLAY UNTIL JULY 26
Pasco-Hernando Community College's Art Gallery will exhibit a collection of student artwork Tuesday through July 26. The gallery is at the PHCC West Campus Library, 10230 Ridge Road.
The exhibit includes drawings from students in the Drawing I and Drawing II classes. The classes offer students an introduction to the basic discipline of drawing through the use of still life, landscape and the figure.

COUNTYWIDE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP HOSPICE PATIENTS
Hernando-Pasco Hospice needs volunteers to visit with hospice patients and to assist with various office projects or with the legacy program, which involves the use of video equipment and a talent for interviewing.
A new volunteer orientation will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 18 and 20 at the Brooksville office, 698 S Broad St. Lunch and light refreshments will be provided both days.
Also, Hospice's Compassionate Paws is in need of therapy dogs to bring comfort and cheer to patients.

Reserve a table for Sonshine arts festival
Table reservations are now being taken for the 14th annual Sonshine Arts and Crafts Festival, which will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 27, Christ Lutheran Church, 475 North Ave. W.
Indoor tables and outdoor spaces are $15. Reservations must be received before Aug. 31.

County boards seek volunteers to serve
The Hernando County Commission is accepting applications from individuals to serve on the following volunteer boards:
-Enterprise Zone Development Agency Advisory Board. There is one vacancy for a representative of the financial/insurance sector, which expires May 22, 2011. There are three vacancies for Enterprise Zone residents, which expire May 22, 2010. An enterprise zone is an area with chronic economic problems and is designated as a place where private businesses become eligible to receive tax credits and refunds in return for providing jobs and property revitalization.
-Hernando County Historical Advisory Commission. There is a vacancy for a city of Brooksville representative. Applicants should have a strong interest in the history and ancestry of the county. The purpose of the commission is to promote the preservation of historic materials and resources, and to encourage awareness of local history.
-Hernando County Law Library Committee. There are three vacancies on the committee. The purpose of the Law Library Committee is to maintain and operate the Law Library, which is in the Hernando County Courthouse. By maintaining the library, the committee ensures that attorneys and pro se litigants have equal access to current legal information. Applicants must be active members in good standing of the Florida Bar Association.
Applicants for all boards must be residents and registered voters of Hernando County. Application forms are available in the County Administrator's Office, 20 N Main St., Brooksville, and must be returned before 5 p.m. July 23. All positions are voluntary and unpaid. For information, call 754-4002.

Check out the library for free entertainment
As part of the Florida Library Youth Program, the Hernando County Public Library will offer these free programs next week:
-Tuesday: Storyteller Windell Campbell, West Hernando/S.T. Foggia Branch Library, 6335 Blackbird Ave., Spring Hill. The program includes animated storytelling and puppetry.
-Wednesday: Fritzy Brothers One Man Circus, East Hernando Branch Library, 6457 Windmere Road, Ridge Manor West. The show includes unicycle riding, cowbell ringing, juggling and circus ball-walking.
-Thursday: The Shaggy Dog, Lykes Memorial Library, 238 Howell Ave., Brooksville. The movie stars Tim Allen as Dave Douglas, an attorney who is accidentally infected with a serum that turns him from human to dog without warning. This 2006 film is rated PG.
-Friday: John Storms' World of Reptiles, Spring Hill Branch/Harold G. Zopp Memorial Library, 9220 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill. Storms' friends include snakes, turtles, a crocodile, lizards and possibly a 21-foot python.

Aripeka Elks Lodge 2520 will sponsor a "Trip to the Tropics" at 6 p.m. July 14 at the lodge, 9135 Denton Ave.
Live entertainment will be provided by Celebration, which will perform Jimmy Buffett, reggae and other island-style music. There will be coconut bowling, limbo, best island wear contest and other games.

Free family 'Tropical Bash' at band shell
A "Tropical Bash" featuring the De Lei'ed Parrotts will be from 4 to 8 p.m. July 14 at the Hernando Park band shell, 205 E Fort Dade Ave.
The free family event is part of the monthly Bandshell Bash and Brooksville Cruise-In hot rod car and motorcycle show, sponsored by the Hernando County Fine Arts Committee and Bandshell Bash Committee. There also will be an array of vendors, as well as food and beverages available.
