Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon Robinson, says she will be thinking more about her father's civil rights legacy than his six consecutive All-Star nominations during baseball's All-Star Game on Tuesday. Her book Slam Dunk will be published in September. She lives in Apollo Beach.

What's on your nightstand?

I just finished Duplicate Keys by Jane Smiley. I'm about to start Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

What did you enjoy most about Jane Smiley's book?

From the beginning, I was hooked because she's so relationship-driven.

Did your dad inspire you to write?

It was my mom and grandmother who gave me a love for the arts and literature. My dad inspired me to be involved with current events. We'd watch the news together and then talk about it. He also worked on civil rights issues right in our home, and that made an impression. I remember seeing Martin Luther King in our dining room when I was 13. They were raising funds for bail for jailed civil rights workers.
