FENCING: Alex Duncan of Oldsmar placed second among 50 competitors in the Youth 10 Men's Epee division of the Summer National Championships, held June 29 until today in Miami.

Earlier this year, Duncan earned silver and bronze medals at the Gasparilla Regional Youth Circuit tournament in Lakeland. He has been fencing for a year and a half and is coached by Boyco Krastevitch.

TRACK & FIELD: For the third year in a row, throwers Jalanika and Samon Whiting of Largo will compete in the AAU Junior Olympic Games on July 25-Aug. 4 in Knoxville, Tenn.

Samon has won three straight state championships in the shot put. She finished fifth in the event at last year's AAU nationals in Virginia, and third in 2005.
