TODDLER DROWNS AFTER FALLING INTO POOL

A 15-month-old boy drowned Saturday, after he walked through an open gate and fell into his grandparents' pool. Jordan Acosta's family was unaware of the danger as they tended to another child who had cut her chin. When they realized what had happened, it was too late. The gate, like all of the cabinets and doors inside the house, had been secured with a child-proof latch. Medics flew Jordan to Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he was pronounced dead at 6:45 p.m. Oneida Acosta, 35, his mother, said that her parents had child-proofed the house because "they knew he was a handful." But no one counted on an open gate. "It took just a minute to lose our baby, " she said.

Leak fixed, but still stay out of water

An underground sewer line leak kept Palm Harbor residents out of local canals but was fixed by Sunday evening, Pinellas County Utilities said. But spokeswoman Carla Mitchell said residents of the Baywood Village subdivision should still stay out of the water. The results of samples pulled from the area won't be in until later today, she said. The leak was discovered around 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Though it did not affect water in residences or businesses, contaminants seeped into a series of intersecting canals in the subdivision, west of Alt. 19 and south of Klosterman Road, Mitchell said.

Teen is stabbed; another is sought

An argument between two teens Sunday led to a punch, which led to a stabbing, Tampa police said. The argument at W Spruce and N Jamaica streets escalated quickly, said Lt. Martin Gonzales. Police are not releasing the name of either juvenile. One threw the punch, the other responded with a knife. The victim was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and listed in critical condition, Gonzales said. Police are looking for a male, about 5-foot-8, last seen wearing a red shirt.

Fire hospitalizes man, guts home

A man suffered serious injuries Saturday while trying to douse flames on a mobile home stove, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue said. The fire broke out at 9:50 p.m. at the Riverview Lawn Mobile Home Park, 8215 Stoner Road. The man, whose name is not being released, escaped through a window and was later taken to Tampa General Hospital. Both the mobile home and an F-150 Ford truck were destroyed in the blaze.
