TAMPA - Tony Dungy's book begins with an ending: the final chapter of his coaching career in Tampa Bay.
Fired after a 30-second meeting with the Glazer sons, Dungy packed boxes and memories of six seasons from his office, as he watched a light rain turn to a downpour.
"I wandered out of my office and through the building, stopping in the coaches locker room," Dungy writes in his book, Quiet Strength: the Principles, Practices & Priorities of a Winning Life. "Standing in the middle of room, I let my gaze sweep over the cramped, worn, 12 by 15 room. I looked from locker from locker, reading some names, imagining others.
"Oscar, the guard on duty, escorted me through the locked gate on the side of the building. My security code no longer worked."
Dungy's book, which becomes available today, details his lessons of faith, family and football, from his days growing up in Jackson, Mich., to coping with the suicide of his son, Jamie, and making history by becoming the first African-American coach to win a Super Bowl.
For Tampa Bay fans, it also provides a riveting account of the behind-the-scenes developments that eventually led to Dungy's firing after a 31-9 wildcard loss to the Eagles in 2001.
"The first chapter of the book starts with me leaving Tampa and what my thoughts were at the time and how my faith is tested in those type of things," Dungy said Monday by telephone from Los Angeles.
"I did believe maybe the Lord's plan for me was staying there in Tampa. It's something we considered because it was such a big part of our lives that we thought maybe we should do something outside of football."
Dungy admits he was somewhat blindsided by his firing, particularly because he had been assured by vice president Joel Glazer in the final preseason at Atlanta that his job was safe.
But when the Times reported Dungy would be fired if he didn't beat the Eagles in a playoff game, he planned to confront Joel Glazer on the team plane to Philadelphia.
"That Friday morning, Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times wrote an article quoting unnamed sources that I would be fired if I didn't win the playoff game against the Eagles," Dungy wrote. "I really didn't worry about it, but I didn't want the players to get distracted. So I brought the paper on the flight so I could talk to the Glazers. I knew I could ask Joel, given our conversation in Atlanta, and his assurance then that I was their coach.
"Throughout the course of my six-year tenure with the Buccaneers, the Glazers always flew with the team to away games.
"...None of the Glazers were on the flight with us that day. As Lauren said, I'm very naive, but that was the first time I felt that something was going on. How could the owners not fly with us to playoff game?"
About a week after his firing, Dungy was hired by the Indianapolis Colts. The next season, in what he described as "bittersweet", he watched Jon Gruden lead the team to a victory in Super Bowl XXXVII.
The Colts appeared to be on the verge of a title themselves after starting 13-0 in 2005. But on Dec. 22, at 1:45 in the morning, Dungy received the worst phone call of his life.
"As a head coach, I occasionally receive middle-of-the night phone calls, usually about some trouble one of our players has gotten into. At 1:45 in the morning, Thursday, Dec. 22, the phone rang and Lauren handed it to me. (I hope one of our guys isn't hurt as I reached for the receiver). This time the call was not about a player. It was about our son. For reasons that will never be fully understood, James had taken his own life."
More than 1,000 people stood in line to at a wake for Jamie to offer their sympathies to the Dungy family.
"The City of Tampa, our home, stood up for us once again - this time with a different kind of ovation," Dungy wrote.
EXCERPTS FROM THE BOOK
On watching the Bucs win the Super Bowl:
If we had stayed in Tampa, would the Bucs have gotten to the Super Bowl? Yes, I believe so, if we had stayed the course. But that's just speculation. Under Jon, the Bucs got the job done. (Those three weeks, were the toughest part of the transition process for Lauren and me. But through it all, we never doubted God was using this experience to mold and teach us.)
On his last night at One Buc after being fired:
I wandered out of my office and through the building. Stopping in the coaches lockerroom, standing in the middle of room, I let my gaze sweep over the cramped, worn, 12 by 15 room. I looked from locker from locker, reading some names, imagining others. ... Oscar, the guard on duty, escorted me through the locked gate on the side of the building. My security code no longer worked.
On what Joel Glazer told him in the preseason:
"Tony, I know you're hearing rumors that if we don't win it all, we're going to make a change. I want you to know you don't have to win the Super Bowl this year. We don't want to extend your contract now with two years left, but you're our coach." That was all I needed to hear to give me his word. Lauren wasn't convinced however. Something was different and she could feel it. She always claims that I go through life with rose colored glasses while she is more perceptive. She is right on both counts.

STEPHEN, you must have slept through the '99 season. Except for the referees' blown call in the NFC title game, the Bucs WOULD have made the Super Bowl with King at QB. Gruden would kill for the offense King and Dunn, etc., put up in '99 and 2000.

No doubt Tony Dungy is a class act, but at the time he was hired the Bucs' needs were on offense, and Tony is a defensive guy. With the Colts, their offense was fine the D needed what TD could bring to the picture. Glad it happened to a good guy.

I have the deepest respect for Tony Dungy and his convictions. But Gruden was the right man at the right time. The team has finally gotten its cap straightened out after McKay botched it up. I love Dungy but Gruden is the right man for the Bucs.

A great man and would not mind him to be my mayor but he had to go when asked if he had to change anything and he said no after the eagle's loss.
Also to those who say Gruden won it with Dungy's tam...guess Dungy won it with Mora's guys too.

I will never forget the picture of Coach Dungy walking to his car, head down, in the pouring rain. He was and is a great coach, but more importantly, a wonderful example of what a man should be. Strength, character, moral values and his strong faith!

Dru, to not see that Jon's had to rebuild this team over the past 4 years (while Bruce was rebuilding the cap) is being close-minded. Who would've done a better job? Who should replace them? Without those answers, this is just a complaint.

Mike,I love the fans who still live in 2001.Yeah,Grudumb won a SB,but what has he done since.Bucs had no offense that year;the DE had 3 TDs in the SB.Grudumb has a losing record which will get worse by years end if he lasts that long.

The source of the Dungy is going to be fired rumours was more than likely none other than former Bucs GM Rich Mckay who would've had any number of ulterior motives in feeding that information to certain local media personalties. Bet they miss him!

Jay Glazer didn't lie when he told Dungy that he didn't have to win it all to save his job. Had the 2001 Bucs gone as far as the NFC title game I believe Tony would've had a year of repreive.Losing 31-9 in a wild card was understandably way too much

I spent 31 years in Tampa -- '65 to '96 -- and am a life long Bucs fan. Dungy's defense and a lifeless offense never would've won a Super Bowl. Jon complemented Dungy's defense here as Manning has in Indy. At the end of the day, everybody won.

I am a REAL life long Bucs fan. I loved through the 80's and early 90's. Dungy, Gruden, and the Glazers have ALL been good for this team. I wish the front runners and new found Colts fans would give it up. Maybe they would prefer Ray Perkins.

Oh yea of little faith, the Bucs will bounce back this year and the bandwagon will return. Congrats Tony but you never had the gusto to beat the Eagles, Gruden did. Change is good!

When Tony was escorted out of One Buc place in the rain after his firing God was God, and when Tony won the Superbowl in Miami during yet another rainy night that same God was still God. The Point: He is the same God yesterday today and forever.

The Glazers are pinheaded liars. Simple as that. The idiot Bucs fans who were screaming for Dungy's head back in the day deserve Jon Gruden and his mess of a team. I stopped being a fan years ago. Why root for scoundrels and scumbags? Good for Dungy.

TB fans know Dungy brought a team from crappy to respectible to legit contenders. The Defense was feared. No one knows if he could have won a Super Bowl in 2003. But he sure did in 2007. Maybe Booger was the deciding factor - he's got 2 rings.

Tony Dungy is a great coach and a god fearing man who loves Tampa Bay.I know it's about winning games, but for me it's about character. His character won the respect of many. He call Tampa Bay his home. The fans are the winners.

The Glazers are dishonorable. So is Gruden. They are made for each other. Gruden consistently tries to add criminals to the team and would have had they passed physicals. I have switched to the Colts and hate not rooting for the home team. So be it.

Tony Dungy great coach and a racist. Has always been about the black thing, Cost them the superbowl in 99 when he stuck with King when Dilfer got healthy. I guess that makes me the a-hole.

Remember Tampa replaced RB Dunn and WRs Anthony and Green with actual NFL caliber players the year Gruden won the Super Bowl. Score one for Dungy. But Gruden made it happen; score one for him. That makes them equal, and Tampa was lucky to have both.

Kiffen's Defense flat out won the Super Bowl.Look at the #'s that DE put up all year.If Gruden was the reason, why does his offense suck every year?Jason, name me players that Gruden has drafted.Yup,team is going nowhere fast.Enjoy the cellar Bucs

Do people really have terribly selective memories? The Glazers are roasted, yet compare them to Culverhouse era. The Bucs have had two very decent head coaches in their past two chances. Do you really think Parcells would have fit? No. Be thankful.

The Super Bowl team was Gurden's Offence remember how many new offensive players started. Brad, Key, Mike, Coleman, and facemask everybody else was new. The defense was Monte and Tony's and I thank them all for getting rid of the yucks. Go Bucs!!!!!!

Its funny that Gruden beat two teams he used to coach for on the way to the title that year. One can be so lucky. Dungy got that team together. Kind of easy to coach against teams you know inside and out.

If the super bowl year wasntGruden's team that's fine but who were sapp, brooks drafted by? Wyche!! Dungy drafted reidel, jaquez, regan upshaw, warrick dunn, and marcus jones with 1st and 2nd rd picks. Wouldnt the raiders then be Gruden's team

The Glazers got what they deserve...a coach with nothing but potential...show me results...anything else is just excuses. Coaches may not make the team but their leadership and backing by the owner does set the direction...case in point New England.
