Largo to select new leader

Largo city commissioners plan to choose a new city manager at 5:30 p.m. today at a special meeting.

One of the two candidates will replace Steve Stanton, who made $140,234 annually and was fired in March. Here's a look at the two candidates:

 

Henry Schubert, 53

Assistant city manager since 1993.

A 27-year city employee. Joined the city full time in 1980 as a management analyst.

Before 1980, he worked as a planning technician for Largo in a position funded by a state grant.

Other city positions: Budget officer, assistant to the city manager and city clerk.

Personal: Married. Graduate of Dixie Hollins High School, St. Petersburg Junior College and the University of South Florida. Also earned a master's of public administration from USF.

Current salary: $115,440

 

Norton "Mac" Craig, 70 

Acting city manager; assistant city manager since 2004.

Joined the city in 2000 as environmental services director.

Prior job: Deputy district director for the state Department of Environmental Protection's Tampa office.

A retired Army lieutenant colonel, command chemical officer, with 29 years of service.

Personal: Married. He and his wife together have nine children. Hometown is Smackover, Ark. Earned a bachelor of science degree from South Arkansas University; attended U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

Current acting city manager salary: $134,284
