U.S. attorney candidates face interviews today

The seven applicants for U.S. attorney will interview for the job in Orlando today.

After the interviews, the state's federal judicial nominating commission will send three recommendations to Republican Sen. Mel Martinez. Martinez will consult with Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, and they will send their top pick to the White House for approval.

Finalists for the $145,000-a-year job include four current assistant U.S. attorneys: Dennis Moore and Adelaide Gonzalez Few with the Tampa office; Cynthia Hawkins with the Orlando office; and F.T. "Frank" Williams with the Gainesville office.

Other candidates include former federal prosecutors Latour "LT" Lafferty and Ken Lawson, as well as A. Brian Albritton, a Tampa criminal defense lawyer. 

 

St. Vincent de Paul names interim director

ST. PETERSBURG - Patricia Waltrich, a public affairs specialist, has been named interim executive director of the South Pinellas Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

She replaces Sophie Sampson, who resigned last month because of health problems.

Waltrich, currently the society's manager of public affairs, will oversee 24 employees, a soup kitchen, thrift store and Center of Hope transitional housing complex until a permanent director is named, board chairman Richard Kubick announced Monday.

 

Ex-NBA player to talk of plans for heliport

EAST LAKE - News of Matt Geiger's plan to build a heliport at his mansion - it's on the market for $20-million - has kicked up a cloud of anxiety among his neighbors.

Concerned they might torpedo his proposal, the ex-NBA player hurriedly got the county to reschedule a hearing set for Thursday.

Now Geiger's strategy is to have a neighborhood meeting to explain himself.

It's scheduled for 7 p.m. July 23 at the Allegro Senior Lifestyle facility at 1755 East Lake Road.

 

City officials to choose city manager today

LARGO - Largo city commissioners plan to choose a city manager to replace Steve Stanton at 5:30 p.m. today at a special meeting.

The candidates are Norton "Mac" Craig, 70, acting city manager, and Henry Schubert, 53, assistant city manager. Stanton was fired in March.
