More than 160 people gathered in the rain Wednesday morning at a picnic shelter at Woodlawn Park in St. Petersburg to remember Osby Green. Green, who worked for the city's parks department, died Monday in a lawn mower accident. He was riding a mower, cutting grass near a small ledge next to a storm canal at Burlington Avenue and 53rd Street, when the mower flipped and fell into the canal, trapping Green under the water. At Wednesday's memorial service, the longtime city worker was remembered by friends and family members. Mayor Rick Baker and other city officials attended. One of Green's friends and co-workers, Tyrone Hazley, above, spoke about Green during the service. Hazley said he had known Green for more than 25 years and that the two had been friends at Gibbs High School. Two cards, including the one at left, were passed around during the service for people to sign. Green had worked for the parks department for 26 years and had handled a variety of jobs. He had a good reputation, said city services administrator Clarence Scott. Family members said Green, who was 58, grew up in St. Petersburg and was dedicated to his job. "He will certainly be missed, and our heart goes out to his family," Scott said earlier this week.
