Max, a Weimaraner who is almost two years old, plays with Cassidy Braak, part owner of Barks n' Wags, during a rollerblading run along Bayshore Boulevard.

After a two-year sabbatical, Christine Holloway decided to go back to work. She worried, though, about Sheena, her black Labrador. Sheena is 60 pounds and a little more than a year old.
"She's spoiled," Holloway admitted.
Without enough exercise, Sheena gets bored and into trouble. She was kicked out of doggie day care because she was in heat - at the same time Holloway was returning to her restaurant job. Both Holloway, 34, and her boyfriend John Oliva, 43, work long hours. Walking Sheena wasn't enough. Sheena needed to run.
So, a month ago, Holloway called a professional. A doggie personal trainer, of sorts.
Now someone from High Tail It Pet Sitters comes to exercise Sheena every day at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. They run her hard. They do agility training. They throw balls. It costs $13 per visit.
"It's been a big relief," Holloway said. "They wear her out for me. I wish I had known about this sooner."
Requests for dog runs, rather than walks, are up with pet sitters in the Tampa Bay area and nationwide.
Some companies, such as Barks n' Wags in Tampa, offer to skate with your pooch. Owner Jason Kelly said clients stop laughing at the idea when their dogs come home worn out and happy.
"Dog running went from unheard of to uber-hip," said William Sharp, a part-time dog walker in San Francisco. "People like telling their friends, 'I have to leave a key for Fifi's dog runner.' It's far more sexy than 'dog walker,' which is so yesterday."
Though running is generally thought to be good, be extra cautious before starting a program.
"Big, stupid, young dogs - Labs, Dalmatians, goldens - can never get enough exercise, but dog runners aren't for every dog," said Dr. Monica Clare, a critical care specialist at the Animal Surgical and Emergency Center in Los Angeles.
Before hiring a dog runner, Clare says, pet owners should have dogs examined by a vet, who should check for bad knees, bad backs, bad hips and breathing problems.
Pet owners should send their dogs only to runners who are trained to monitor their charges, especially in scorching weather. If you want to be insane and run at noon on a Florida summer day - fine. But don't make your dog do it.

Barks 'N Wags rollerblade with my white lab every day. Not only is the exercise fantastic for him, but he loves it and he learns many things from them. He is a very fit and very well trained dog due to their efforts!

I have personally used Barks N Wags and value the expertise of Cassidy and Jason. I really feel like my dogs are getting the best attention with them, They really love animals. I would recomend them to anyone who is looking for more then a dog walker

How rude of Dr. Clare to call Labs, Dals, and Goldens 'big & stupid'! She should be banned from the veterinary field!

We have two Weims and we run them everyday, but certainly not during the day in the summer. Early AM(6AM) or late evening(8PM) works well. The idea of running a dog in the daytime may cause heat exhaustion. This story contradicts itself.

I think it's great to be able to have someone play and love my pet when I have to work. I would use High Tail It, since their website says that ALL of the employees are either vet techs or VERY experienced with animals!

I think it's a great idea! What a great way to give your pets a boost when you can't be home to play with them as much as you would like. I am calling High Tail It today

I think it's great! I have High Tail It come and walk my dog on weekdays, because I work such long hours, and they also come a few times a day when we go out of town. My pets adore them!

Response to the comment by MS... Put up a doggie door? Can you say unsocialized aggressive dog... Maybe you could walk your dog and get some exercise for yourself. Great Idea for Barks n' Wags and Hight tail, let's support local small businesses.

While I disagree that my Dalmatian is a stupid dog, he would love to have someone take him running!

ms, you may wish to run your numbers again. Thirteer times five days per week is $65.00 a week. Times 4.33 weeks per month is $281.45 a month.

Ms-
1. People in townhomes/condos don't have yards
2. Dogs aren't likely to play and exercise alone. They're more likely to just dig holes in the yard and under fences if left alone all day, to look for a playmate.
Sounds like a great service

MS,I guess you've never owned a large dog. When they're young they want to play. Putting up a fence isn't enough when they like to dig. I have a 2 yo pit and when he was 8 moths old, he learned how to jump a 7 foot fence so explain how that helps.

$13.00 per visit. Say they only run them Monday thru Friday, that's $780.00 a month. $9,360 a year. How about putting up a fence and putting in a doggie door. Look at the money you save, then you don't have to work so much and run your own dog.
