Firefighter unions seek to join property tax suit
Two South Florida unions add their support to the mayor of Weston, who filed the lawsuit.

TALLAHASSEE - Unions representing more than 200 firefighters on Friday joined the legal fight against the Legislature's property tax plans.
The Hollywood Professional Firefighters and Coral Gables Professional Firefighters petitioned a circuit court in Tallahassee to become a "friend of the court" in support of the suit, filed Monday by Eric Hersh, mayor of the Broward County city of Weston.
The suit asserts that proposed constitutional ballot language is misleading and should be thrown out.
Without the amendment, which would provide "super" homestead exemptions, the $15-billion rollback and cap of local tax bases is not valid, Hersh argues.
"We really want to show that this is broad-based and now just some maverick city official," said Russ Chard, president of the Hollywood firefighter union.
"If a well informed public wants to make these budget cuts, that's fine," he said. "But we don't think the way it's being offered to them allows them to make an informed decision."
Chard said he expects at least a half-dozen other fire unions and some police organizations also will join the effort.
During last month's special legislative session on property taxes, hundreds of firefighters staged a protest outside the Capitol, saying the budget cuts would trim jobs, lead to longer response times and increased insurance costs.
Republican leaders in the House and Senate dismissed their talk as scare tactics.
Hersh's suit initially was filed with the Florida Supreme Court, but the high court transferred the case to circuit court on Thursday, calling for expedited hearing. As of Friday, the judge had not set a schedule.

Roll-back all local government salaries
& benefits to 2001 and add back in inflation adjustment 2% increase. Local budgets could be reduced probably 20% with ease.

Another blackmail scare tactic. Drive by any firestation anytime of the day & watch the firefighters polishing their truck. Why do they have to go to every fender bender? Use time & resources wisely and there won't be cutbacks.

"Only go when the police call if necessary..." Last time I checked, St. Petersburg had the worst Police Officer retention rate in the state. Your suggestion might work if the PD actually got to the scene of an accident before the Firefighters.

"Perhaps we need to consider private companies for fire service..." That's been tried before in places like Scottsdale AZ and it's been disasterous. When Mayor's stop ignoring Fire Service funding, FF's will have little reason to march on Tally.

I doubt the ff jobs would be the first thing trimmed. Where is the FL GOV budget published? I'd love to get a look at it down to line item detail so we could see some of the pork flying in TLH.

Firefighters/police opposing tax fairness...SOH has really screwed things up and is being sued. It may be overturned in court.

Anyone can be well informed if they so choose. I fail to see what information has to do with getting the admendment off the ballot. People vote all the time based upon commercials. I don't see names removed. How much tax $ will be wasted with suits?

I agree with the firemen and policemen, it would be better to keep these public servants on the county payroll. I don't want to be unprotected. JUST ROLLBACK THEIR WAGES 20% TO MEET THE BUDGET, ELIMINATE HIGH PAID OFFICIALS AND KEEP THE WORKERS......

It is real disapointing to see the firefighters who I have so long admired join a political fight against the taxpayer. Sounds like whining teachers. Perhaps we need to consider private companies for fire service competition like schools vouchers.

here is a great start to allow the fire fighters to cut their budget and have to rise to the community. Stop allowing the fireman to attend eveery car accident in town. Only go when the police call if necessary. This will save million of gallions gas
