Gruden's crush: 'I love Garcia'
For the next six months or so, quarterback Jeff Garcia and coach Jon Gruden will be inseparable.
By RICK STROUD
Published July 15, 2007
TAMPA - Garcia and Gruden. Gruden and Garcia.
Or, if you prefer, Jeff and Jon.
For the next six months or so, quarterback Jeff Garcia and coach Jon Gruden will be inseparable. They will share more than initials. In fact, their futures will be intertwined.
It's the 37-year-old quarterback with his fourth job in as many years and the coach trying desperately to hold onto one.
If you think another player has a chance to win a starting job under center in training camp, which begins July 26, think again.
"I love Garcia," Gruden said recently. "I like what he's doing a lot. I just think he's got some traits we haven't had around here - his mobility, his experience."
Those are exactly the two traits Gruden values the most in a quarterback. Garcia will be the eighth starting quarterback since Gruden arrived in Tampa Bay in 2002, but he is the only one who brings both qualities to the party. Brad Johnson had the experience and used it to get the ball out of his hand quickly, but he moved like he was in quicksand. Bruce Gradkowski made some plays with his feet but was green as grass. Chris Simms had some of both but not enough of either trait.
In Garcia, the Bucs will have a quarterback who can anticipate coverage, react to the defense, create throwing lanes with his mobility and use arm angles to deliver the football accurately in tight spaces.
"I'm accused of not liking young players," Gruden said. "I just like good quarterbacks, like everybody else in this league. Guys that can make plays a number of ways, whether it be through experience, seeing a look, not running the ball into a corner blitz, making a change at the line of scrimmage. A guy who can create with his legs. I like a guy that works the pocket and can throw the ball in congested areas and be accurate. A leader. A consistent performer."
As a result, Bucs fans can expect to see a lot more movement on almost every play. It will be hard for defenses to know exactly where Garcia is setting up one down to the next.
How important is mobility in a quarterback to Gruden?
"It's very important," he said. "If you can't move around, it's going to be hard. Peyton Manning is not the most mobile guy, but if you watch him play, he's got one of the quickest triggers in the history of football. He's deadly accurate. He's as good as there is. But you've got to have some mobility to create passing lanes and some body quickness and some anticipation, and some things Jeff certainly possesses.
"Garcia is a guy we coveted. We made no secret about that the last few years. He's in great shape, he's doing a good job and I don't want to jinx him. He still has a long way to go, but we do like his progress, and we think he's got a nice future here."
If that's true, Gruden has a long future in Tampa Bay.
NO WESTBROOK: One piece of the puzzle Garcia will miss from Philadelphia is a running back who can turn check-downs into touchdowns.
He had that in Eagles multi- purpose back Brian Westbrook, who never came off the field. In addition to rushing for more than 1,200 yards and seven touchdowns last season, Westbrook led the Eagles with 77 receptions for 699 yards 9.1 average, including four touchdowns. That's more catches than Cadillac Williams has had during two pro seasons (50).
Williams has worked hard in the offseason to improve his pass-catching ability.
"He only had three drops last season," running backs coach Art Valero said. "But they were big drops in critical situations, so people remember them."
Valero believes Garcia will make Williams a better receiver because he delivers the ball to backs on time.
"He puts it right there so their eyes are turned upfield when they catch it," Valero said. "That makes a big difference."

Been a Buc fan since 1976 and lived through 0-26. Was in front of the TV for the Saints win and in the stadium for the first home win (over the Cardinals). Got all my S-bowl memories and bragging rights. With NFL ticket I will see them in 2007.

About Gruden winnning against Oakland in the SB. The important thing was that we beat the Eagles. The Raiders were a formality. The Eagles would've waxed them as well in the SB because of a defense. We won because of World Class Defense.

Has anyone (besides me and Gruden) considered that Garcia is the perfect mentor for Gradkowski? Garcia can lend experience to the kid, which really, is all he needs to be dynamite at QB.

See ya Jeff when Gruden says he loves you that is the kiss of death. As for Gruden winning the superbowl for brining in the right offense, but McKay was general manager. Not Bruce Allen Grudens yes man.

Anyone who thinks this is still Dungy's team must not be able to read a roster. The pieces are completely different, to compare then to now is apples and oranges. JR hit the nail on the head. The bandwagon is going to collapse under its weight in Oct

I covered TB for 10yr for a fantasy football website. Dungy's a great coach and molded us into a contender but couldnt get the ring. We won it w/Gruden, doesn't matter with whose players, but the cost (2 1st rd pics) has hurt us since then.

We're split evenly on being Gruden supporters or haters. I'm a supporter due to the word of those who have real insight: his players. All the articles I read from off. & def. players say they love Gruden's coaching style. In 07 its put up or shut up.

You fans must be those "gamers" on the internet all day, refusing to face reality.A great Bucs season will be 6-10...Grudumb is like Barry Switzer;terrible coach who inherited a talented team & won a SB.Bad coaches win SB's.Grudumbs record proves that

It's not all about the draft but talent development. Dungy developed the talent that was drafted before him. Gruden has had some good drafts, but after a great rookie year, they falter (see Clayton, Cadillac). He's not developing the talent.

If a coach has been w/a team for 5 seasons & 3 resulted in losing records, isn't that coach a failure?I think so.It's 2007 Bucs fans,SB was long ago, quit burying yourself in the past.I know the present & future look terrible, but Jon will be gone soon

mckay/dungy got alstott, booger, dexter j., b-kelly, warrick, donnie abraham, gramatica and barber. all of these contributed big time to our rise. so we had good drafts under dungy. although martin did fade QUICK for us. but when we were good he was.

Dungy & Lovie showed that you can do it right, be good human beings and that character counts, and still get to the super bowl. Gruden has done it wrong and is close to the grim reaper. You Gruden defenders deserve what you will get this season.

I agree with steve and all you people who are jumping on dungys bandwagon this is his last year coaching cuz he will not win another superbowl the only reason he won is because of Manning and remember that wasnt his team he won the big one with

You heard it here first. Plummer will be Gruden's man come the first regular season game. Garcia - he'll be gone. That is Gruden's strategy all along.

And, if it was Dungy's team, you can't have it both ways. The Bucs played Gruden's OTHER team in that Super Bowl. Either way, Gruden gets credit for taking a team to the Super Bowl.

You people are so ignorant. It wasn't Tony's team (just his D). But Joey J's catch against Philly wouldn't have happened without Gruden bringing him in. Pitman? McCardell? Sapp and Lynch even said it, Dungy was not going to win it all with the Bucs.

All the people who claim to be Buc fans but dont support them arent true fans I believe the Bucs will make the playoffs with a 10-6 record and will go into the second round of the playoffs and then people will jump on the bandwagon again

Enough already. Do people want Gruden to apologize for winning the Superbowl? Everyone was frustrated our window of opportunity was closing on an aging defense. Anybody really think Clyde Christianson was on the verge of an explosive offense?

We had garcia here and as a backup then starter he divided the team. Maybe he has learned from that though I don't see Garcia as a full year QB anymore, remember he only played I think 1/2 the season in Philly whichover thelast 4yrs maybe=9 goodgames

Aaron, are you kidding? Dungy/McKay gathered the talent? Who drafted Lynch, Brooks, and Sapp? Wyche! Dungy/McKay can be credited with Marcus Jones, Jaquez Green, reidel Anthony. And how could Gruden "build" with NO high picks and a maxed sal-cap?

Who was glad when Dungy got fired? Was your head burried in the sand Shane? There was a huge public outcry. Good job Gruden, you won a Super Bowl with Dungy's team. What has he done since? Now we are supposed to celebrate an aging QB as the savior?

I agree with Aaron, what does the song say, "Its too late baby now its too late thought we really did try to make it." Poor drafting,ah Cadillac and Clayton, has sunk this pirate ship.
