ST. PETERSBURG - Roll out of bed on Thursday and high-tail it to downtown St. Petersburg for the 34th annual Sunrise Sale and Pajama Party.

Don't bother to put on street clothes because your pajamas earn discounts and some gifts from many of the participating businesses.

At 6:43 a.m. Thursday, more than 40 shops will open their doors for a fun morning of shopping and discounted merchandise. Participating businesses are as far north as 18th Avenue N, south to Central Avenue, east to Beach Drive and west to 11th Street.

The Looper downtown trolley will ferry shoppers between merchants for free, running approximately at 10-minute intervals from 7 to 11 a.m., with stops at seven destinations.

The Downtown Business Association sponsors the annual event that includes entertainment and giveaways from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Musicians will play at various locations, including Joe Braccio playing Tropical Steel Drum on Beach Drive; pianist, composer and vocalist Eland Wilson on Central Avenue and Fifth Street; and more.

The sale began in the early 1970s as a way to lure shoppers to Beach Drive during the sluggish summer season. It has evolved into a colorful summer ritual.
