FEMA to melt ice intended for Katrina relief

GLOUCESTER, MASS. - After nearly two years, thousands of truck miles and $12.5-million in storage costs, a cold relic of the flawed Hurricane Katrina relief effort is going down the drain. The federal government is getting rid of thousands of pounds of ice it had sent south to help Katrina victims, then north when it determined much of the ice wasn't needed. The Federal Emergency Management Agency had been hanging on to the ice in case it was needed for another disaster, but decided to get rid of it because it couldn't determine whether it was still safe for human consumption. The ice, held at AmeriCold Logistics in Gloucester and at 22 similar facilities nationwide, is being melted. FEMA spokeswoman Alexandra Kirin told the Gloucester Daily Times that FEMA tried to donate the ice but "had no takers." Elsewhere Singer shot: A woman was shot and killed early Saturday while she sang with a band at a restaurant and bar in Cheyenne, Wyo., police said. They were looking for her estranged husband, a National Guardsman who they said had sniper training. Robin Munis, 40, was shot in the head with one gunshot that came from outside the Old Chicago restaurant. No one else was hurt. The couple had recently separated, and Robin Munis had complained about receiving harassing calls as recently as Friday from her husband, David Munis, 36. A Wyoming Army National Guard spokesman couldn't confirm if he had sniper training. Service for wrestler's family: Chris Benoit's professional wrestling colleagues were among the mourners Saturday at a memorial service for his wife, Nancy, and their son, Daniel, 7, in Daytona Beach, where Nancy Benoit's parents live. Chris Benoit killed Nancy Benoit and Daniel in their Atlanta area home three weeks ago before hanging himself, authorities said.
