Produce selection is peachy
By Chris Sherman, Times staff writer
Published July 18, 2007
In summertime, Tampa Bay area fruit stands get a taste of the rest of the country. Our favorite right now is peaches. A brutal Easter freeze stole most of South Carolina's crops and bruised Georgia's orchards too, but those that survived are extra sweet; lab tests show their sugars are 50 percent above usual. Other goodies in our produce basket this month: cherries and figs for salads and easy desserts; and fresh fava beans, unblemished and chlorophyll green (steam 'em with mushrooms, and toss with shrimp, bacon or prosciutto and a little mint on pasta).
