Army 2nd Lt. Jennifer Hansen, daughter of Margaret Simmons and stepdaughter of Peter Simmons of Seminole, has graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where she studied civil engineering. She received the Eastern College Athletic Conference Merit Award for excellence in athletics and scholarship, the Maj. Gen. Philip H. Draper Memorial Award as the Army women's basketball team's 2007 Most Valuable Player, and the Col. Frederick A. Mountford Memorial Award as team captain. She will complete her Officer Basic Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and serve with the Engineering Corps.

Air Force Airman Michael B. Mills, son of Charles and Mercy Mills of Seminole, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is a 2006 graduate of Seminole High School.

Naval Sea Cadet Kevin Jones, son of Diane Devers of Seminole, completed the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Session course. He is with the Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Suncoast Squadron, and is a senior in the International Baccalaureate program at St. Petersburg High School.

Army Command Sgt. Maj. Tony H. Purdy, son of Elizabeth Leshore and John Purdy and stepson of Eugene Leshore, all of St. Petersburg, recently assumed the responsibilities of command sergeant major of Garrison Command, Fort Bliss, Texas.

He previously was command sergeant major of Army Combined Arms Support Battalion, McGregor Range, N.M., and battalion command sergeant major of 1st Battalion, 56th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, Fort Bliss.

Purdy joined the Army in 1979 and has served at several bases in the United States and in Korea, Germany, Kuwait and Southwest Asia.

He is a 2003 graduate of U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy Class 53 and a graduate of the USASMA First Sergeant Course, Drill Sergeant School and the Air Defense Advanced Noncommissioned Officers Course.

His decorations include the Army Meritorious Service Medal (fifth oak leaf cluster), Army Commendation Medal (third oak leaf cluster), Army Achievement Medal (10th oak leaf cluster), Army Good Conduct Medal (eighth award), Unit Award, Army Drivers Badge and Army Drill Sergeant Badge.
