Alan Gilbert, the 40-year-old son of two New York Philharmonic musicians, has been appointed to become music director of the orchestra, the Associated Press reports. He becomes the first native New Yorker in the position, ending years of speculation over the successor to current music director Lorin Maazel, who said in 2004 that he would leave after the 2008-09 season. "Every time he's come here, it's been better than the prior time," Zarin Mehta, the orchestra's president, told the New York Times. Gilbert's parents have both performed as violinists in the Philharmonic: Yoko Takebe, who is currently with the orchestra, and Michael Gilbert, who retired in 2001.

Campbell Brown: MSNBC or CNN?
NBC is trying to keep Weekend Today co-anchor Campbell Brown in the family. When Brown's contract expires at the end of the month, she'll have an offer from CNN waiting for her, says TVGuide.com. The cable news channel is trying to lure Brown with a substantial raise and a nightly program. But NBC News has the right to match CNN's salary package.
Note to TV Times readers
