Another Buc QB?
Jon Gruden, who already has seven, talks to Daunte Culpepper.

Quarterback Daunte Culpepper, leaving a Dolphins minicamp workout in June, is looking for work and Bucs coach Jon Gruden is almost always ready to hire another throwing hand.

TAMPA - Jon Gruden feels the need for another quarterback.
Would eight be enough?
The Bucs coach met Thursday with free agent Daunte Culpepper, the team confirmed.
Although the Bucs did not comment on the meeting, it's believed to have occurred at the corporate hangar at Tampa International Airport. Also greeting Culpepper were general manager Bruce Allen and Doug Williams, the team's senior pro personnel assistant.
Culpepper, 30, played just four games last season, in which he was sacked 21 times, for the Dolphins before succumbing to complications from knee surgery and was released Tuesday.
The Ocala native played college football just up the road at Central Florida.
The Bucs already have seven quarterbacks on the roster: Jeff Garcia, Chris Simms, Bruce Gradkowski, Luke McCown, Jake Plummer, Bruce Eugene and Zac Taylor.
Garcia has been declared the starter while Simms has struggled to regain his form since surgery in September to remove his spleen. Plummer has announced his intentions to retire, and the Bucs have not convinced him to reconsider.
The meeting with Culpepper came one week before the Bucs report to training camp at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista. The team denied reports that Culpepper worked out Thursday.
Culpepper, who serves as his own agent, could not be reached for comment. He became expendable when the Dolphins completed a trade with the Chiefs for Trent Green on June 6.
The Dolphins, who acquired Culpepper from the Vikings before the 2006 season, did not allow him to participate in team drills. And with his grievance scheduled to be heard Wednesday, the Dolphins chose to cut ties.
And upon being released, Culpepper said he was eager to find a new team.
"Now that I have won my freedom and I get to choose my next team, I am just like many other people who have to go out and find employment so that I can take care of my family," he said in an e-mail.
It's uncertain where Culpepper, 6 feet 4, 235 pounds, would fit on the depth chart. If he signed, most likely, Simms, 26, would be the odd man out.
There are still several questions surrounding Culpepper, starting with his health. He has spent 21 months rehabbing after tearing three of four ligaments in his right knee during a game in 2005.
The other is salary. Culpepper was due to earn $5.5-million this season, although his value has dropped dramatically after two teams have given up on him.
But in 2004, Culpepper had one of the best seasons in NFL history. He threw for 4,717 yards and 39 touchdowns with the Vikings. In 84 games as a starter, Culpepper has completed 64.2 percent of his passes for 21,091 yards and 137 touchdowns.
The Bucs could have competition for Culpepper. Jacksonville has informed its quarterbacks of its interest, and former Vikings coach Mike Tice is on the Jags staff.
St. Louis also could be another landing spot because quarterback Marc Bulger will be a free agent after this season and coach Scott Linehan was the Vikings and Dolphins offensive coordinator.
"I just hope that there is still a team or two out there that has an opportunity for a hardworking quarterback who is willing to come in and contribute wherever needed," Culpepper said Tuesday.

The Qb is set with Garcia. He should play part of 1 & 4 qtrs. With the rest of the Qb's rotating 1,2,3,&4. Then The Staff will make prior to camp over. Who will be here and who won't.Gradkowski,Simms,McCown & Taylor. Each pre-season will rotate qb's

I'm not a football expert, but doesn't a team need 11 quarterbacks on the field at one time? I don't even think you're allowed to compete without a full squad of 11 quarterbacks.

I can't believe that Gruden is looking at another quarterback! Let the competition have Culpepper and let Gruden concentrate on getting players that are really needed. We have enough quarterbacks! Maybe its time for a new coach like Bill Cowher?

A team that makes alot of sense to me that no one really mentions is the Chicago Bears. I think he would do well there style of offense. I think he would make a better back-up or potential starter then Brian Griese.

another quarterback wont help the bucs, the amount of reps each arm gets are already to thin.Grudens offense is very complicated,we have seen way to many come and go ,but have not used the time to develope any. Lets stop spinning our wheels!

I think the Rams should try to go after this guy.....he will be a good back up quarterback, even though he has had his up and downs he should get signed by the Rams for at least a year

All they did was take a look people. How many times have we taken a look at someone and then never heard anything else about it. He may have come to us bc he's from around here and he wants us. Give it a rest those of you drinking the Hatorade.

Dave is right on point. The bucs will be in the market for a QB, but they been down this route. Everybody forgot Jay Fiedler huh. Scary similar story. Injured QB with good history RELEASED by Miami. The bucs neeed a real talent at the position soon.

If Gruden wants to bring another QB in. It tell`s me one thing,he must not truley think the guy`s he has here now (aside from Garcia)can get the job done. Why else would you keep signing a position that`s already over flowing?that`s just my opinion.

I wanted to draft Culpepper out of college. But now why doesnt Gruden just trade Simms to Atlanta where he can actually have some reps in not all and let the guy have a chance to show everyone his skills.

There's plenty wrong with bringing in 8 QB's. Every QB needs reps to get his timing down with his WRs and learn what his O-Linemen can and can't do. Galloway's too old to lay out for passes so timing with a 5'll" speedster takes a lot of reps.

It baffles me the depth of ignorance on these forums...If I were a coach I'd love to bring 8 QB's to camp and be able to pick and choose, there's never harm in window shopping, it doesn't say they offered him a contract, but we need 2 good qb's.

SteveA, your a front runner...... Signing Culpepper would be good for alot of reasons.
1. Garcia starts this season
2. Culpepper would be an excellent back-up.
3. He is only 30 hes got sometime to learn the system in Tampa.

It's about Grudenò019s system. Gannon worked because he was mobile w/ a quick release (as is Garcia). Due to the injuries Daunte is like a statue now and historically a vertical passer (like Simms). This just wouldn't make sense for the system we play.

Bucs go ahead and sign culpepper and get rid of simms, hes dead weight anyway, put plummer on the retired list, get rid of mccown and taylor and then well have only 3 QBs again and save lots of cap room

Settle down! The Bucs talk to almost everyone so this is not a surprise. Culpepper is trying to create interest in the marketplace because his value has dropped. The Bucs are happy to indulge him. Make the competition spend more money....

That's a tough call between Simms and Culpepper for 3rd QB. They have strong arms, but neither is very good at reading a defense. I'd give the nod to Simms since he knows the system and already proven he can come off the bench and win games for us.

None of the current 268 rostered qbs have stepped up to claim the backup spot, which appears to be in question. Sign Culpepper, since Plummer is in lala land.....that gives us, Garcia/Culpepper and a fight for the last spot....maybe keep a 4th.

oh boy. i am not downing culpepper but when he was a viking, he had a reciver that had the name Randy Moss, all he had to do was throw the ball up and Randy would go get it. Now i do agree with mike, he would be a good 3rd quarterback.

Gruden is just trying to see if he can steal a vet to add to his arsenal. I doubt Culpepper would be looking for backup money.

It looks as if John Gruden has finally realized that he is no longer the pinnacle percher we of Tampa Bay, (the Bucs org. and the fans) installed him as. Too late John! A spin-off league consisting of only quarterbacks? I'm excited already.

I don't like how Gruden is running the team but I do think Culpepper still has it. Before his injuries he was great. I think he rushed back to quickly. Better than Grad or McCowan anyways! Even if he came in as 3rd on the depth chart, good 3rd!

Culpepper is definetly interesting. I doubt we sign him, but I also doubt he's washed up. The talent he showed in Minnesota doesn't just evaporate by age 30.

Is every quarterback that gets released or retires a reclamation project for Gruden?? Everyone remembers how will he did with Rich Gannon, but every other quarterback is not Gannon. He should just focus all his efforts on the qb's he has now.

Jimminie Crickets! What is Gruden thinking? We all know of his QB fetish; but this is ridiculous. Isn't Culpepper all washed up? He looked horrible last year with the Phins.
