The Spring Hill Dixie Darlings and Hernando Debs are getting ready for their respective World Series, which start this weekend.
The Spring Hill Dixie Darlings open their tournament against South Columbus, N.C., on Saturday in Albemarle, N.C., which is about an hour east of Charlotte. Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia are represented in the 12-team tournament. North Carolina has two teams competing.
Managed by Melissa Russell, the Florida team of 7- to 8-year-olds is making its World Series debut. The Spring Hill Darlings are a balanced squad with experience - many players were on last year's state runnerup squad - and a potent offense. During its state championship run, the Darlings outscored opponents 94-18.
The Hernando Debs, coached by Paul Sinwelski, open against Louisiana's Madisonville. The 16- to 18-year-old squad is composed of talent from Hernando County's high schools. The Debs' World Series is in Marianna, a half hour outside of Sneads.
