High school gets scoreboard ... only $400,000
By JOEY KNIGHT, Times correspondent

It appears Lakeland High's football program, winner of three straight state titles, is poised for its big-screen debut - literally. Installation is set to begin early next month on a $400,000 video scoreboard at Bryant Stadium (seen above in a rendering). According to the Ledger newspaper, the cost and installation will be paid by the football booster club. In a deal reached with the Florida High School Athletic Association, replays during games may be shown only once and at full speed, the paper reported. "The concern is that the use of replay, in many instances, will call the officials' judgment into question," said Denarvise Thornton, an FHSAA associate director of athletics. Head to preps.tampabay.com for a larger view of the rendering.

I am just speachless. This is a total waste of money that could be better used for something to benefit their education. Sports are great but cannot replace a good education! Come on wake up here folks!!!!!!

I believe that this expenditure is a sad commentary on society's priorities. I understand that this does not come from the school budget, but it is money that certainly could be better utilized.
