The playoffs or bust?
Jon Gruden might need to make the postseason to save his job.
By GARY SHELTON
Published July 24, 2007
Easy job, Jon Gruden's.
The way I figure it, the heavy lifting should be finished by lunch.
Let's see. All Gruden has to do is break in a new quarterback and rediscover a running back and reinvent a wide receiver. He has to cure a pass rush and strengthen a run defense and convince his secondary that covering a forward pass would be a fine idea. He has to build an offensive line and rebuild a defensive line and load a shotgun. He has to keep old players young and make young players older and make sure healthy players stay that way.
Oh, yeah. And one other thing:
Somewhere along the line, Gruden has to figure out what goes in front of the phrase "... or else."
Two days before the Bucs report for training camp, and everyone seems to believe Gruden is in his double-secret probation year. If this isn't Gruden's Last Stand, it's at least the stand to prove it shouldn't be his last. Whether you think it is premature or overdue, after three losing seasons in the past four, it seems Gruden has reached the elimination round.
What, exactly, does that mean? No one knows because the Glazers, who own the team, aren't saying. Does Gruden have to win the Super Bowl to keep his job? Does he have to win a playoff game? Would a winning record but a playoff miss do it? How about a .500 record with a couple of close losses and gushing praise from John Madden?
The way I see it, a playoff berth sounds safe.
The question is, does saying "a playoff berth" sound sane?
Given the activity of the offseason, it would be grand to pronounce that the Bucs have been cured and that playoff tickets are being printed as you read this.
But no matter how many times you check the predictions, there do not appear to be reports of widespread confetti on the horizon. A great many things might weigh down the Bucs in '07, but expectations will not be among them.
I know, I know. The Bucs ought to be better this year than last. The quarterback situation is better. The offensive line is better. The defensive line is better. The linebackers are better. Even the secondary should be better.
But are the Bucs that much better? Are they save-the-day better? Are they turn-the-beat-around better? Probably not.
If you are an optimist, and there aren't many left, you are probably thinking a lot about 2005 these days. If you remember, the Bucs were coming off a perfectly dreadful 5-11 record in 2004, and they bounced back to go 11-5 with a playoff berth the next year. So there.
This time, however, a turnaround from 4-12 would be harder. Remember, as bad as that '04 team was, it still had a superb defense (fifth in the league), which still had a fierce pass rush (45 sacks, third in the league).
When it comes to a turnaround, a great defense is a good place to start.
By comparison, last year's defense fell to 17th, and only one team had fewer sacks than the Bucs. In other words, this hole is deeper.
Still, if the Bucs are going to be significantly better this time, there are some lessons to be learned from '05. They need a fast start. They have to play great defense. They have to run the ball. They have to own the fourth quarter. And yeah, they have to get some breaks late in games.
Most of all, however, the Bucs have to control the NFC South. That's their best chance.
Consider: In 2004, the Bucs went 2-4 against their division. In 2005, they went 5-1. They beat Atlanta twice, and Atlanta fell from 11 victories to eight. They beat New Orleans twice, and the Saints fell from eight wins to three.
Last year, and it might sting to remember, the Bucs were 0-6 in their division. If they want a leg up in the standings, that's a good place to start.
Look around. The Falcons seem to be a bit of a mess these days. Either they are going to lose their quarterback or their season is going to turn into a circus. Yeah, the Bucs ought to have a better season than the Falcons.
Carolina? If Jake Delhomme doesn't play better, the Panthers can be had. On paper, they're better than the Bucs - but not by much.
New Orleans? The Saints are tougher, and they're a fashionable Super Bowl pick. Still, the Saints aren't a good enough defensive team to make anyone surrender.
As for Tampa Bay? To win, the Bucs need an awful lot of things to go right. From Garcia. From Williams. From Brooks and Barber and Rice and Adams and Galloway and Clayton and Petitgout and June and Kelly and Hovan. From a few other names, too.
If I were a Glazer, I would want to see how Gruden juggled all of the moving parts. I would want to see how much improvement there was from a year ago. I would want to see if young players were progressing or backsliding.
More than anything, I would want to see the Bucs in a playoff race.
Or else.

4 division titles, 3 conference, etc...Wasn't it Tony Dungy who built the Superbowl caliber team in the first place? He did it in Tampa, now in Indiana. Perhaps Gruden will get the head coaching job in Indy...Naw they ain't that stupid!

4 division titles, 3 conference championship appearances, 1 Superbowl win in 8 years. I think the numbers speak for themselves.

Gruden fact: "Since arriving in 2002 Gruden's offense has finished ranked 24th, 10th, 22nd, 23rd, and 29th in the league." Need I say more?

The guy is about 4 years removed from a SB win and 2 years removed from a Division title. He had a 6th round rookie QB starting most of his games last year. Stop your whining & show the guy some support. He deserves better than an "or else" year.

How are Jon gruden and Tony Dungy alike?
They both turned the Tampa Bay Bucs completely around in 2 years.

Why would Cowher come to Tampa? So the fair-weather fans and bone-head media can run him out of town like Dungy? On Gruden: why make it black and white, playoffs or bust? So, if the team has progress, but barely misses out, he's fired? That's dumb.

I think that if Coach Gruden does figure everything out. Then Tampa Bay will have a great turn around year. But if Tampa goes 8 & 8, then I see Gruden will probably leave. But I don't blame Gruden for the present sistutation. I blame the Glazers .

We let Dungy and his "Quiet Strength" go, and got Gruden's f-bomb-laced rants in return. We deserve what the Bucs have become. Clean house!

Tampa gave 2 1st rd. & 2 2nd rd. picks 4 gruden. They tied up money in veterans that didn't pan out, and faced salary cap issues. After all of that, you have to give Gruden at least three more seasons, this current and the two following to win big!

I used to live in Kansas City and saw Gruden build the Raiders (the Chief's rivals) into a Super Bowl team. Gruden may have won with Dungy's team but he beat the team he and Allen built to a SB contender. He doesn't get credit for that around here.

How long does it take for people to see that Gruden is a loser. He isn't very good to adapting to what he sees on the field, he just runs the same antisipated plays with little results (Super bowl one year and not even a snif of the playoffs in 3.

It's amazing how quickly Tampa turns on its team's coaches and owners. Everyone cries now for the long gone Dungy (I liked him when he was here too), you should go into the archive and read articles crying for his removal in '01 & '02. Amazing... Sad

What are the minimum requirements for Gruden to keep his job? If the team goes 9-7 and into the palyoffs people in Tampa Bay will be happy. Get back to the reason Dungy was fired...no Super Bowl. Gruden has to win another one or he has to go also!

The bottom line is Gruden and Allen rebuild the team way too much. They get rid of caliber guys who are good and think they've found a replacement and that just isn't happening, find a formula and stick with it, with minimal casualty.

It would be nice if just once, we had an exciting offense to watch. I think the root of the problem is that the Bucs have pretty much ALWAYS had a below-average offensive line.

Get rid of a coach that does it right, Dungy, bring in a coach that does it wrong, Gruden, and this is what you get. It's all on Glazer. The fans should root for the Colts, as I do. Maybe loyalty should go with the people of character instead of team

George. A nice foundation? A 40 yr. old QB. A hodgepodge Oline. An inept offense. An ancient defense, with a large contingent of rookies and nothing in between. Yep...That's a STRONG FOUNDATION! Next years coach will have to completely rebuild!

Changes have been made by Gruden to put the bucs in a great position this year. The growth on the O-line coupled with the shotgun will give the QB more time to make better throws and alow the recieving corp to make catches. This will be a great year.

Last year the Bucs' pass rush was weak and some corners didn't play. As a result we got smacked with the pass. This year that will change. Our pass rush is stronger and the corners have plenty of competition. The Bucs pass defense will be much better

Monte's defense really let Gruden down last year. Monte was out schemed most of the year by average offenses with average coordinators. Gruden is going to have to get involved in both offense and defense if the Bucs are going to have a chance.

Using numbers as the sole source for evaluating a team is just being lazy. Rice played many games with that hurt shoulder before he went on IR & he gets most of his sacks at the end of the season. We'll have better coaching and players on defense.

Lets finally come to the realization that Gruden is just not much of a coach. A good coach makes adjustments to his personnel. He doesnt make his personnel fit his system. He is an egomaniac always looking for the cameras with his grimace.

Who made all those changes. Gee I think his name is Gruden. Every year he makes some dramatic changes and says this will be the year. I say you fired Dungy for more playoff seasons than this jerk we have, so nfc conference game or out the door.

How much longer was the defense on the field. Maybe if the offense can run some clock, the D will prove to be a little better. Yeah, what Bill said!
