Crime unit to be disbanded
Anticipated budget cuts make the prevention unit look like "a luxury," a spokesman says.

For more than two decades, members of the sheriff's Crime Prevention Unit inspected homes for security, addressed homeowners associations and developed brochures with names like "Burglary Prevention for the Homeowner" and "What You Should Know About Auto Theft."
Those days are about to end.
Sheriff Bob White is disbanding the unit, effective July 30, because he anticipates budget cuts will force him to focus on core law-enforcement operations.
Spokesman Doug Tobin said the five members, all civilians, will have the option of moving to the department's communications division, which handles 911 calls.
White expects county commissioners to trim his $94.7-million budget request, Tobin said Monday. The request includes a 13 percent increase and 109 new positions.
In response, White and his commanders are looking for ways to streamline without affecting law enforcement.
"I guess the Crime Prevention Unit could be considered a luxury, based on the budget cuts we could be facing," Tobin said.
The agency will try to compensate by training volunteers from the Citizen Service Unit to do some of the tasks. But Tobin said a diminished role is inevitable.
Among Florida's 67 counties, Pasco's per capita crime rate ranked No. 32 in 2005. It jumped to No. 20 in 2006.
Even as Florida's crime rate reached a 36-year low last year, Pasco's crime rate rose nearly 11 percent. So why was the Crime Prevention Unit a target?
The sheriff has to cut somewhere, Tobin said, and he wants to make sure he has as many people on the front lines - such as patrol deputies and 911 dispatchers - as he possibly can.

My opinion that Sheriff White has poor skills in managing funds. "Trim the fat". Deputies should 1st off share cruisers. 2nd, NO fancy light bars & gadgets. 3rd, funds saved on cruiser operating costs could be used to increase funds all around.

Actually, deputies pay for their own tinted windows. And we DO need cruisers that go over 50 because people out there like to driver over 80. The problem is Sheriff White has too many high paid civilians sitting on the butts not doing anything

Less than half the new positions are for deputy sheriffs Chris. Instead of complaining, why not attend county commission meetings, or call the sheriff and ask instead of looking foolishly mis-informed.

How is it that the deputies are able to take their patrol cars home and go to bars in the patrol car? Why is it that if an officer rents an apt and has a partol car he brings home, it means cheaper rent for the officer?

In tight financial times, Prevention is always the first thing to go. Doesn't make a bit of sense to me! I guess there are more jobs on the back-end than there are in prevention?

Crime prevention is not that important. What's important is that now they will have enough money for those strip club stings.

The increased tax revenue from Wiregrass will solve all of Pasco's problems. Your crime will go down, jobs will be plentiful and traffic on 54 will disappear. ;-)

No Chris he has to pay for all the new Impalas and the new expensive light bars. Oh lets not forget tinted windowsa that are darker then the legal tint we are allowed. He will only loose the new deputies to a higher paying county any way.

Cut out preventative medicine but deal with the sickness later. I guess all 109 new positions need a new $30k Crown Vic, right?
