Sluman to assist Nicklaus for third time

Jeff Sluman will again serve as assistant to U.S. captain Jack Nicklaus in the Presidents Cup, set for Sept. 27-30 at Royal Montreal. Sluman, the longtime PGA Tour player who won the 1988 PGA Championship, played on the 1998 team and also assisted Nicklaus in 2003 and 2005. "I've enjoyed working with Jeff, and it only feels right to have him as part of the team again as we head to Montreal," Nicklaus said Wednesday. Added Sluman, in Ontario for the Canadian Open: "I was very, very honored again that the greatest player that I've ever seen - well, you could throw Tiger (Woods) there, too - asked me to help him out for the third consecutive time."
LPGA scholarships available for fall
The LPGA Foundation has three college scholarships for the fall. Application deadline is Monday. The Dinah Shore Scholarship goes to a high school senior who will not be playing collegiate golf but has played in her community or on her school team; the Marilynn Smith Scholarship is given to two high school seniors who will play collegiate golf; and the Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship is a need-based award to a high school senior from a recognized minority background who will play collegiate golf. Go to www.LPGA.com.
Brooksville course 'worth the drive'

The verdict: "With its tiny, functional pro shop and clubhouse, World Woods prefers to let the golf speak for itself. Sure, its metabolism could use a jolt from the defib paddles, but that's golf. It's worth the drive."
Belleair golfer loses in first round
After Evan Jensen of Belleair advanced to match play from the field of 156 at the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship in Lakewood, Wash., with 4-under 140 (68-72), she lost in the first round by one to Katie Sylvan of San Diego. Jensen was 3 up after six holes but lost the lead for good to a birdie on No. 15.
