Nightstand

Before he became secretary of Florida's Department of Children and Families this year, Bob Butterworth served four consecutive terms as the state's attorney general.

What's on your nightstand?

Innocent Man and The Broker, both John Grisham books; Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson; and Crazy by Pete Earley.

Do you enjoy Grisham's recent books as much as his older novels?

His earlier novels were all page turners. Innocent Man nonfiction is not as easy to read, but I'm moving through it.

Are you one of those lawyer types who keep up with legal fiction?

I like to read books on leadership like Who Moved My Cheese because I don't want to get into a rut. I also recently read Crazy, (about) a boy who did time in a Dade County jail, written by his father. How we handle the mentally ill in our legal system is a key issue for my office. Twenty percent of our people in jail are mentally ill.
