A variety of bird-related events take wing

Great Weedon Bird Quest: Go on a adventure to find the preserve's birds, 8 a.m. today, Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive NE, St. Petersburg. Learn the identifying marks and behaviors of feathered year-round inhabitants and seasonal visitors, while helping compile an annual checklist. Binoculars and bird guides are available. Free. Exotic bird adoption: Dozens of exotic birds, from perfect parakeets to caring cockatoos to marvelous macaws, and everything in between, will be looking for new loving homes from noon-4 p.m. today at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 9099 130th Ave. N, Largo. Adoption is through Safe Haven Avian Placement Services, which provides rescue, education, and permanent placement services for homeless companion birds. Potential adopters should be able to commit several hours a day to interaction with the birds. Please bring completed applications to the event, along with proof of an appropriate-size travel carrier.
