The fitness room at the Seminole Recreation Center will be moving soon, but it won't be going too far. It will simply change places with the rec center's game room.

The move will give the city a chance to enlarge the popular center that draws more than 800 people doing all sorts of exercises every week during the off-season.

When winter residents arrive, the usage goes up, said Jim Sheets, Seminole's recreation director.

"The existing room is a very popular space," Sheets said.

On Tuesday, City Council members approved spending up to $100,000 to make the switch, buy four to six additional fitness machines and upgrade the game room when it moves into its new quarters.

The move will enlarge the fitness center by about 600 square feet.

Sheets is not sure when work will start, although the city is shooting for late August or early September. The game room is expected to be closed for two or three weeks while the change is made, he said.

Meanwhile, recreation officials and architects are planning a public meeting to talk about plans for a senior center.

The meeting is designed to provide information to residents and get suggestions from the public.

It is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 8 in Room 210 of the recreation center, 9100 113th St. N.
