Quarles hired as scout Shelton Quarles is working for the Bucs again.
Three months after being released by the team for failing a physical -- stop us if you've heard this before -- the former linebacker was hired as an advance scout.
The third-leading tackler in team history will scout upcoming opponents and prepare reports.
Quarles attended practice Wednesday at Disney's Wide World of Sports and said he was excited about his new assignment, unofficially announcing his retirement from the NFL after 10 years with the Bucs.
Quarles, who turns 36 next month, disagreed with the team's assessment that he was not healthy enough to continue playing. But Quarles and general manager Bruce Allen had been discussing a possible role for him within the organization for several years.
"It wasn't as bad as it seemed," Quarles said. "To have the opportunity to be a part of this organization is great for me, great for my family. We love the fans, the ownership and they have been great to us. Having the opportunity to be a part of this organization feels really good."
Quarles said he had an opportunity to continue his playing career but didn't want to move his family from Tampa.
"He's a Buccaneer," coach Jon Gruden said. "His passion for the game is unparalleled. As a scout, his love of the game will really help us."
Last month, the Bucs hired former tight end/long snapper Dave Moore as a radio color analyst.
Cornerback Brian Kelly said it would be good to have Quarles still hanging around the team.
"It will be good for us to see him around still in some kind of way," Kelly said. "He's a good guy, a great guy, a great teammate and it's just good to see him in the building with us."
What? His head doesn't hurt?
Left tackle Luke Petitgout, who had a history of back pain when he was with the Giants, did not practice for the second straight day. That raised some eyebrows until Gruden set the record straight.
"He's got a sore body," Gruden said.
Oh.
Gruden said Petitgout is expected to return today.

The Bucs took the afternoon practice off for a little team bonding.
Gruden ordered his team to attend the movie Rescue Dawn, based on a true story about a man who is shot down during the Vietnam War, taken hostage and sent to a POW camp.
It marked the fourth day in the past five that the Bucs did not have any field work during the scheduled afternoon workout.
