Maybe you've enjoyed singing along with Mary Poppins or the Von Trapp clan in The Sound of Music. Now the in-theater karaoke version of Hairspray is coming to AMC Veterans 24 in Tampa.
Beginning Friday for a limited time, Hairspray will be shown on one screen with subtitled lyrics. Viewers are encouraged to sing along with Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky); her mother, Edna (John Travolta), and 1962 Baltimore's "nicest kids in town" on the Corny Collins Show.
New Line Cinema is doing this on 100 screens in 30 U.S. cities, hoping to boost the box office fortunes of director Adam Shankman's adaptation of the Tony-winning musical, based on John Waters' 1988 film. This is the first time in memory that a current release has been presented in this fashion.
Don't feel like singing along or listening to others try? Veterans 24 will present Hairspray without subtitles on another screen. Ticket prices are the same, with discounts for seniors, students and matinees.
