Officials might put curfew on beach beat

Officials consider a drum circle ordinance.

The Treasure Island Board of Commissioners was scheduled to hold a first reading of a drum circle ordinance Tuesday. The ordinance would require any activity that takes place on the beach to end at 10 p.m. during daylight savings time and at 9 p.m. the rest of the year.

It also would apply to any event, sponsored or not, that takes place on the beach or in any city parks that has not been approved to run past the designated cut-off time by the commission.

City Manager Reid Silverboard said the ordinance was not aimed at only the drum circle, despite its recent attention from the media and police.

"We've been looking for a way to get a handle on some of the activities that take place on the beach," Silverboard said. "The drum circle is an example of an unsponsored act that really nobody claims to be in charge of."

The drum circle is a Pinellas County Tradition. It is beautiful that there is no leader. It doesn't matter who shows up its always there. There has never been violence, theft or aggressive behavior and has been a peaceful place for all ages.

I miss the 1986 Pinellas County; where you could park for free almost anywhere. Remember non-beach residents pay to have the beach replenished so that your condo isn't sitting in the Gulf. Greedy......
