COUNTYWIDE With a new school year just around the corner, Pinellas County science teachers are back in class this week: not as teachers, but as students. The Pinellas County School District is giving a little gift to all K-2 science teachers: four days of free science training. The teachers are learning hands-on science experiments, which can be used in the classroom, during an event sponsored by the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. The training will help teachers prepare children for the newest section of the FCAT: the science portion. The science FCAT was included in school grades for the first time this past school year. Science teacher training began Monday and ends Thursday. The Science Center of Pinellas County is at 7701 22nd Ave. N in St. Petersburg. For information on the Science Center, check out the Web site www. ScienceCenterOfPinellas.com or call (727) 384-0027. COUNTYWIDE Donations needed for school drive The Florida Orthopaedic Associates and Natural Image Plastic Surgery have teamed up to sponsor a Back to School drive, donating school supplies to needy children in local elementary schools. The drive began July 24 and ends Friday. Donations are being accepted at 4600 Fourth St. N. For information, call Peggy Kent, (727) 527-5272 or check out the Web site afopa.com.
