Unruly teens have no business at BayWalk
By BILL MAXWELL
Published August 12, 2007
Like thousands of other St. Petersburg residents, I occasionally enjoy going to BayWalk. It is, after all, the unofficial city center.
So when I read John McNamara's letter last Sunday in Neighborhood Times, headlined "Entertainment complex will get no more chances," I worried that BayWalk was becoming a hangout for young troublemakers, especially after 10 p.m. on weekends.
If you missed his letter, here's what St. Petersburg resident McNamara reported: On a recent Friday night, he went to BayWalk and caught the 10 o'clock showing of the film Sunshine. When he walked out of the theater around midnight, he encountered "milling masses of minors" in the crosswalk and the parking-garage side of Second Street N.
As fights broke out and a group of five-plus black males rushed to one of the scuffles, McNamara fell as he tried to find safety near the ATM. After the police calmed the area, McNamara walked to the fourth floor of the parking garage and stayed in his car until he believed he could leave safely. He then saw and heard a young black male "leaning over the garage wall directing gremlins away from cops on the streets below."
Most disturbing, McNamara wrote that he saw several black teens near the elevator taking off their red shirts and replacing them with white shirts, "apparently to avoid identification." To make his complaints official, McNamara sent a letter to the city, which was forwarded to St. Petersburg Police Department.
All except one of the few whites I spoke with dismissed McNamara as a racist. The few blacks I spoke with all called him a racist, one saying: "White kids mess around at BayWalk, too, but white people don't say nothing about that."
Although I wasn't at BayWalk with McNamara, I don't question his version of events, and I certainly don't dismiss his core reason for being angry: His night of entertainment was destroyed by unruly teens lacking regard for other people's enjoyment in a private venue that serves the public. Certain details in his letter, moreover, suggest that some of the teens were gang members.
I asked Amber Overby, director of public relations for the Sembler Co., which owns BayWalk, if she knew of gang activity there. Although she said she had heard reports of gang-related run-ins, she couldn't identify any specific gang problems. Most teen disturbances occurred in the Second Street crosswalk or on the sidewalk away from BayWalk businesses, she said.
St. Petersburg police spokesman Bill Proffitt said in an interview that acting Sgt. Paul LaMonde sent McNamara an e-mail message and spoke with him by telephone to assure him the department had responded to the incident and that officers assigned to downtown were aware of problems at BayWalk and would respond to them.
Proffitt, acknowledging that BayWalk was on the police "radar screen," referred to group incidents at BayWalk as "youth activity." In fact, he said, most of the identifiable gangs in St. Petersburg are Asian, not black.
Serious "youth activity," the incident that McNamara described aside, has occurred at and around BayWalk. Car thefts and robberies have been reported. In 2005, large black groups from Bethel Heights and Childs Park brawled at BayWalk. The feud between these two groups didn't ease, albeit grudgingly, until early this year.
After looking into McNamara's complaints, I'm convinced that BayWalk has late-night weekend problems that will grow more serious, even dangerous, if immediate steps aren't taken to prevent these teens from bringing their animosities and turf rivalries - their "youth activities" - downtown.
And those blacks and whites angry at McNamara for his letter to Neighborhood Times should thank him for taking a principled stand, for describing exactly what he observed and for bringing a serious truth to light.

Thank you Ed for your post. I'm with you. There are too many excuses for bad behavior..., and kids aren't the only ones that use them, they learn that from many adults. Just read the news, everyone has an excuse for their bad behavior.

As an Black father raising two responsible young adults, I do NOT view McNamara's comments as racist. I'm tired of us excusing the bad behavior of our children and seeing racism in others. There's no excuse for poor parenting!

Labeling anyone who mentions black skin color in a description of events as a racist is as ignorant as the worst racist. Examine the facts. Ignoring them helps nobody.

As a single female who frequents downtown St. Pete, I'm saddened to see this happening.
baywalk has potential, but is in the midst of a crisis. yes, we need more police protection, Yes, baywalk should pay for it (if they want to keep people coming!

Problems at Baywalk are reflective of the problem that exist in our communities in general. Baywalk is a symptom of the lack of parenting, socio-economic and race issues that have and still exist in St. Pete. Is it 2007 or 1957... hard to tell.

This is similiar to what was going on in Ybor until the the city developed a Child Protection Ordinance, tailored specifically to Ybor: Anyone younger than 18 is prohibited from hanging out in the entertainment district between 11pm and 4am Thur-Sat.

I go to the bay walk movie theaters almost every Saturday afernoon or evening. if you exit the theater around 8 PM there is loud music and dancing in the middle of bay walk. Of course then it becomes a hangout -- no music = no hangout, Simple !!

If you feel that scared to go out. Two words, "Gun permit". The last time I felt uneasy around a group of punks at a mall, I just pulled up my pant leg and they saw what was straped to my calf.

Again, Bill hit the nail right on the head. He's not trying to be white or anything else other than what he sees and is frustrated that the world around him is still in the "poor under-privileged me" stage. Highschool EDUCATION is available to all

Idea to stem the problem Open up a late night donut shop in Baywalk and give out free donuts to the police force. The place will be packed with cops. As for parents and their kids it's hard when the parents are smoking crack to worry about Jonnie

I've seen no indication that the Sembler Co, Baywalk's owner, is investing anything to alleviate this problem, if only to protect their investment. Rick Baker listens when money talks. I never go to Baywalk; too dangerous. But, oh, live music's back!

I think Mike has a good point. Hire security guards (with guns) and have the Baywalk management pay for this. Why should police officers be taken from other areas to supplement a private enterprise. Good point, Mike...

Mr Maxwell,I have always been one to appreciate your opinion in your articles, but your negativity expressed toward blacks and black youths have gotten to be a little over the top. Want an audience?-speak negatives about blacks, the leeches come out

This is about the city bowing to the demands of the Uhurus and pretending there is not a major crime problem brewing in Midtown that will spew over the whole city. It is why, after 30 years, we are looking to move far away from Rick Bakerland.

I've never been to baywalk. After reading that article, i'm never going to visit it either. The bottom line is safety. If people don't feel safe, it's only a matter of time before it's abandoned and left to the criminals.

I agree with Mike, get security guards, and have them armed. Apparently people
aren't being "parents" so why would other's want to be around out of control

I've seen these same activities at Tyrone Square mall. McNamara is not racist, any more than the times reporting a description of a black, white, green or purple person in the paper for any reason.

Why doesn't BayWalk just cough up the cash for some security guards to shuffle these deadbeats along? I had that job once. It's fun.

Simply, Baywalk is a nuisance. McNamara wrote nothing wrong when describing the race of the thugs, he's just telling it like he saw it - the same as I see it. The trouble 9 out of 10 times is black youths. You can't ignore it. I just stay away now.

white kids may be at baywalk too, but you don't see them wearing gang colors like the blacks and Blacks are more prone to oppurtunity violence. White kids are gang memebers too, maybe they hide better then the black teens

profanities, and macho thug actions towards other by anyone is not to be condoned. Their actions will get them hurt if directed towards the wrong person. Profanity, should get them banned and bared fron the area. A tresspass warning then arrest.

The police needs to take control of the situation if necessary by force. This isn't about race, it's about criminal activities. Throw these punks in jail. Only way sometimes is by force.

And don't start blaming the police or society. The police aren't constant babysitters and I don't want to care for the kids (loose term) of others. It is the parents fault. Take care of your kids and keep them home. Quit blaming everyone else!!

Trust me it doesn't take teens, there is a local board that goes out and is just as bad at harassing the general public making you wish you were anywhere but around them. Childish antics is as popular as being a thug these days. Stay safe.

This disgusts me. This is a private "for profit" venue. The parents of these punks think it is their right to be there while these unparented children exemplfy the lack of parenting that has led to this behavior. They are not there to eat or shop.

There is alot of illegal activity going on at the park just before the pier, too. It makes it more unpleasant to enjoy our city..when a bunch of punks are shouting profanities at myself, my company and/ or family. Something has to change!
