First possible hurricane could form The first potentially significant tropical system of the season is gathering strength in the distant Atlantic and could develop into the year's first hurricane this week. Likely to become a tropical depression today, the system is an immense distance from land - 2,200 miles from the outermost Caribbean islands and 3,600 miles from Florida - and poses no immediate danger. Similar systems are lining up behind it. If the system's sustained winds cross 39 mph, it will be named Tropical Storm Dean. Computer models predict its winds will reach 74 mph by the weekend, making it a hurricane. ST.
