LAKE BUENA VISTA - Michael Clayton says he's healthy. Not even his feelings are hurt. The former first-round pick, who has fallen to second team on the depth chart, practiced again Monday. Gone is the slight hamstring strain that kept him out of Friday's preseason opener victory against the Patriots.
After two dismal seasons in which he had 65 catches and one touchdown combined, Clayton faces strong competition from Maurice Stovall, David Boston and Ike Hilliard for the No. 2 receiver spot.
Clayton has seen the depth chart and is aware of the skeptics, but he treats it all like elevator music.
"Basically, the player inside you just says, 'keep pushing.' " Clayton said. "Eventually, when the season comes about, when it's your chance to make the plays because you have that fight in you, you're able to make that play."
The receiver position is one of the most competitive. Entering the job fair Friday night was Paris Warren, who caught four passes, including a touchdown.
"They see Paris Warren go in there and all he does is catch one for a first down, a touchdown," coach Jon Gruden said. "He's a good player, too, in his own right. No one ever talks about Ike Hilliard. I don't understand that. He just catches everything and doesn't say a word. He's just a good football player and some things he does are great.
"So it's going to be a real competitive situation. The better we can get protecting, the more we will use three and four and five receiver sets. It would be nice."
Clayton isn't surrendering. It's uncertain how much he will play Saturday at Jacksonville and it really doesn't matter. He'll have an opportunity when it counts to turn things around.
"Good things will happen and people will forget about this chaos," Clayton said. "That's why I pay no attention to it because I know with my ability, I can go out there and make some plays. It'll all be over with."
GARCIA GETS A BREAK: Quarterback Jeff Garcia took six snaps against New England. He'll be lucky to see that many against Jacksonville on Saturday.
Gruden indicated he has no plans to use Garcia for more than a single series.
"We'll try to see a little bit more of Jeff and get some things done," Gruden said. "Hopefully we can get some things done offensively and allow him to stay in and play a complete drive. But obviously, Luke McCown needs to play. He hasn't played in over a year. He had 20 or 22 really good snaps and four or five snaps he needs to eliminate."
NEW FULLBACK: Fullback Zach Tuiasosopo was signed to take the place left by Mike Alstott, who went on injured reserve.
Tuiasosopo's brother, Marques, is a Raiders quarterback. The 6-foot-2, 249-pound Tuiasosopo entered the league in 2005 as an undrafted free agent with the Steelers. He spent his first season between the Steelers and Raiders practice squads. Last year, he was on the Eagles practice squad.

Five pro-bowls says it all about Garcia. Simms didn't play poorly because he didn't get reps in the pre-season; he just sucks. Simms is 5-10 as a starter - get over it. Garcia will lead us to a winning season - McCown/Grad will backup well.

Your mention of Marques Tuiasosopo is incorrect. He left the Raiders and is now with the New York Jets. The Tuiasosopos are a great athletic family -- Jon Gruden knows this - he drafted Marques back in 2001.

Joe, you be jus' ignant. Garcia used according to his abilities was only the second or third best QB in 49er history with more completions than Steve Young. Terrible teams couldn't help him. That isn't his fault. With an O-line at Philly he was fine.

Right on Joseph. Simms got hardly any snaps in the pre-season and it showed in Weeks 1-3. Let Garcia get his feet wet and play. You can't put these guys in a glass chamber... plus they don't play that well when they're healthy anyway.

Garcia needs more than a series or two of work in preseason games. He has a new line and receivers to learn. The line he had in Philly is far above what we have here....and Garcia will see that at Seattle. Gruden is hanging by a thread right now.

Didn't we go down this same path last preseason. None of the starters played in the preseason and were terrible come week one. Gruden said he learned his lesson from that...YET, HERE WE GO AGAIN! Can nothing or no one get through to this guy!

The reason Garcia didn't get resigned was politics. It was politics. As long as Mcnabb is in philly he is starting, why keep Garcia around when you can dump him and pay someone less to fill his spot.Jeb your an idiot, the safeties are top notch.

Yeah, Gruden wants Garcia in for only 1 series at Jacksonville. That's so nobody gets to see how terrible the old man really is..a bust with the Lions & Browns. If he did so well at Philly, why didn't they resign him? Garcia is a dud, just like Jon G

Clayton says he is focused, working hard, and ready to contribute, yet he fails at every big chance he gets at WR. If the Bucs decide to keep him, they need to make him a safety. He was great safety at LSU and the Bucs NEED safeties(team weakness).

he's better at sensationalizing than reporting real insightful info. it's tough to find out roster info, think you might try nfl.com or maybe he hit the is key instead of the was key? the times is a quick ref, not as strong as it used to be for info.

It'll all be over with... more truer words may never be spoken by clayton its sad but true but with all this talent at WR clayton will have to play big to even make the team... much less being a starter look at how mcfarland got delt with a former #1
