A cornerback and an entrepreneur
On the field, Sammy Davis plays cornerback for the Bucs. But the former first-round draft pick has an interesting role off the field: entrepreneur.
Davis helped develop an apparatus connected to a tube that allows players to drink water while on the football field and now he's trying to market the product.
"One day, me and my homeboy were just sitting around brainstorming, and you know how hot it gets in Texas where I'm from," Davis said. "There are always a bunch of kids passing out on the football field because of the heat. So, we just came up with something so players can get water while they're on the field."
Davis tried the patented product himself as a member of the Chargers the past two seasons and said it was a nice luxury. He also persuaded former teammates Quentin Jammer and Drayton Florence to use the product, which Davis said fits underneath the shoulder pads and adds just a few ounces.
"It's real light and it doesn't hold that much water, so you don't know it's there," Davis said. "You're not trying to drink that much. You just want a shot of water when you're out there on a long drive just to keep going."
Now, Davis and his partner hope to get other players to join in. He hopes the NFL will be interested in making it a part of its equipment offerings.
"I was surprised no one came up with the idea," he said. "You would think it would be (logical) with the way it's so hot out here."

Quote of the day
"I hate the preseason, personally. You feel like it's Week 12 by the time the regular season starts. But it is what it is. You do the best you can with the schedule you have."
Bucs coach Jon Gruden
Easy day
Several veterans had the afternoon off. Among them were cornerback Ronde Barber, defensive end Greg Spires, cornerback Brian Kelly and running back Michael Pittman.
