Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Officials run one of their periodic sweeps along U.S. 19 from Holiday to Tarpon Springs.

NEW PORT RICHEY - She was hungry and jobless, so when night fell on U.S. 19, she offered to perform a sex act for a man for $20.

Turns out, he wasn't who she thought.

He was a Pasco County deputy on an undercover prostitution sting around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

A few minutes later, Heather Gause was charged with solicitation for prostitution and told a deputy about being down on her luck. Her name was added to a list of 11 arrests made during operation "Get the Girls."

From 4 p.m. to midnight, the sheriff's office and the New Port Richey police targeted prostitutes along U.S. 19 from Holiday to Tarpon Springs, said Darryl Garman, New Port Richey's assistant chief.

"Our guys sorted information from the patrol units and residents over the past few weeks to put the operation together," he said. "We've done this off and on over the years."

Most of the targeted areas were in New Port Richey, Garman said, because of an ongoing prostitution problem plaguing areas near motels and the U.S. 19 bridge.

"This had been an ongoing issue for several months," he said.

It's an issue city officials know all too well.

Dan Tipton, a New Port Richey City Council member, said during the 17 years he's lived in the city, prostitution has been a consistent problem.

"I think it's a big priority," Tipton said. "We don't want it, but we know it happens ... it spurts, and it seems at times the police department will work hard on it for awhile and have to back off the amount of hours they put into it into something else."

While the city's code enforcement officials try to curb prostitution within city limits, Tipton said, there's only so much they can do.

"As soon as a bust happens," he said, "they move to another location."

Those arrested and taken to the Land O'Lakes jail Wednesday:

Gause, 37, April Henry, 37, Teresa Jordan, 36, Gina Gross, 31, and Rosalia Molett, 45, for solicitation of prostitution; Roena Siddall, 48, for solicitation of prostitution and possession of cocaine; Kimberly Donegan, 34, for solicitation of prostitution, possession of cocaine, possession of paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance; Gabriel Trahan, 52, James Dukes, 59, for possession of cocaine, possession of paraphernalia and resisting arrest without violence; Melissa Fernandez, 25, for possession of cocaine and possession of paraphernalia; Ashlie Coi Milano, 26, for battery.

No 90% of it is because they dont have any money or want fast money let ur kids see the ages that are on tha screen. Crack dealers dont have anything to do wit it they had a habit before the dealers had crack.

Sorry to say but 90% of the prostitution these days is for crack cocaine. And our kids are getting into it more and more. Get the crack dealers!!

Isn't it funny one of the girl's names is Gina GROSS? ha

"Get the Girls"? Last time I checked there was equal protection under the law. Gender profiling, like racial profiling is ripe with injustice.

at least with prostitution, its being truthful about things. it should be legalized and managed, much like marijuana. people want both, only reason its illegal is because of churches and political campaigns. sex is good, that's how we all got here.

Legalize prostitution. Then it becomes an administrative/civil matter, not a criminal issue.

What about the get the guys night? It's not enuf to target the solicitors, you have to target the customers too. Remove the supply and the demand goes elsewhere, remove the demand and the supply goes elsewhere.
by Diane 08/17/07 10:12 AM
Again I ask why it's not legal and regulated? Sex is legal and selling is legal, so why isn't selling sex legal?

Hungry and jobless leads to prostitution? No drugs involved ? This kind of writing enables the addict ..
by Mark 08/17/07 09:29 AM
It is not about two consenting adults. It is about a source of income that keeps the drug industry working. This is also about women who feel the only way they can make money is to sell themselves. When you feel it is your only choice is it consent?

This sting was a complete waste!! You just wasted a gazillion dollars of tax payer money on a Bunch of "Skanks"!! God!!! do something usefull for a change!!!
by Gary 08/17/07 08:54 AM
Prostitution as been around for centuries. Why are we wasting tax payer money to set up entrapment squads? Law enforcement officers could put their talents to much better use.

With so many incurable diseases out there, why go to a street hooker.. Nevada has it right to allow brothels with rigorious testing. Imagine the inlux of tax money on that!! Brothels and Casinos!! Florida could be a fun state onece again!!

only 2 men who probrably have used one of these girls in the past or present would say such a thing. So Tell me Gene and Jhon if you contracted aids from one of these girls would you be so quick to agree to legalize it? You really want this by you?
by Tony - Greyhound 08/17/07 08:10 AM
Oh not to mention Gay (key) Vista Nature Park they don't even ask for money there. Guess they got to do it somewhere.
by Tony - Greyhound 08/17/07 08:01 AM
Thats just the tip of the iceburg in Pasco with nude bars all over limited police This area is lady & drug heaven. I see it every single day.
by E.C. 08/17/07 07:40 AM
What a waste of tax dollars and people's lives. These girls won't be able to work or rent an apartment as "sex offenders", while the real threats are out committing serious crime. Legalize prostitution and go after violent criminals- we have lots!
by Kyle 08/17/07 07:38 AM
The way things are going economically in Florida, those removed from the streets will be easily replaced. Why waste our time and money on popping hookers? Arresting them won't keep them off the streets. All employers are looking for criminal recs.
by Gene 08/17/07 06:59 AM
I also never saw much difference between this and Dinner and a movie anyway.
by Gene 08/17/07 06:58 AM
Jhon is right. what two consenting adults do with each other is none of the governments business. After all wasn't this preached repeatedly so the general population would accept homosexuality?
by Jhon 08/17/07 05:05 AM
legalising prostitution would be a good idea .It orevents crime and controls it more . A red light district would stop street walking and make streets cleaner . An indulstrial site would be a great place .
