Pit bull that killed dog gets clemency
But the owners of the dead dog say this isn't the end of the matter.

TARPON SPRINGS - Ten days ago, Zeus the pit bull killed a miniature dachshund named Leo. Zeus was quarantined at Pinellas County Animal Services while authorities investigated whether to put him to death. On Friday, officials decided the 80-pound, white and tan pit bullterrier deserved another chance. As a result, Zeus was scheduled to be released from quarantine today. But his owner, Sonya Berry, 35, said she won't take him back to her Tarpon Springs home because "it would cause too many problems for the neighbors." Instead, she plans to return Zeus to his previous owner, a one-armed disabled woman who had trained Zeus to carry groceries and do other tasks. The woman, who also lives in Tarpon Springs, gave Zeus away six months ago because of her failing health, but after reading about this travails, she offered to take him back. Clemency for Zeus, however, meant disappointment and anger for the Mailleses, who owned Leo. Michael Mailles, 48, promised that Zeus' release won't be the end of the matter. Attorneys have been "beating my door down and ringing my phone off the hook," he said, and he's looking forward to his day in court, though he's not sure what claims he would make in a suit. The attack took place the evening of Aug. 8 on Grove Avenue. Leo was outside in his yard with the family's other dachshund, Max. Zeus entered the yard, and the two dogs chased him out into Zeus' yard. The pit bull snapped, fatally mauling the 23-pound Leo. Two neighbors also were hurt in the scuffle. Initially, Berry said Zeus should be destroyed. But she then changed her mind. Welch Agnew, assistant director of veterinary services for Pinellas County Animal Services, said the law is clear in this case. Zeus did not qualify for euthanasia because this was his first reported incident of violence and the attack happened on his owner's property. Animals deemed dangerous by the county can be euthanized, subject to an appeal by the owner. Dogs can be classified as dangerous if they severely attack a person or leave their owner's property more than once to kill another domestic animal. Dogs that have been used in fighting are also classified as dangerous. "It's a sad situation," Agnew said of Zeus and Leo. Times staff writer Carrie Weimar contributed to this report. Unlike other breeds who snap and bite, these dogs snap and maul. Leash smeash, you know it's a matter of time for human error or irresponsibility to occur. Agressive dogs have no place in a neighborhood.

Not exactly what I wrote. What's the point of expressing your opinion if someone at the paper revises it?

Sue? Who?
Little dog attacks big dog. Big dog bites little dog. Little dog dies.
Neither dog was on a leash.
Can you sue yourself for being irresponsible? especially since you live next to a "Pit Bull" and still let your dogs run loose

Cats belong on a leash too. Any cat wondering through my yard is fair game for my alpha dog who is on a LONG leash!

No mention in this story of the guy who got mauled by Zeus trying to get him off his dog. The last story on this mentioned that Zeus has bitten FOUR people over time. Doesn't that count for anything?

Sonya - A sad situation all around, but why was Zeus not on a leash? Too many owners of "unpredictable" breeds assume the animal is under control. To insure they are controlled - USE A LEASH any time the dog goes outside the house or fence! I do.

I thought the paper is supposed to tell the truth. Why won't you post my comment I sent to you yesterday 8-18-07. this isn't fair to Zeus. You have access to the sheriff report to write the true story. Please be honest and clear Zeus' name.

Zeus is a dangerous dog, and needs to be put down. Boo Boo - if your dog kills other animals, he/she deserves the same.

A dog that kills a small dog will also kill a child. They see both as prey.
In fact, most of the dogs that are mauling and killing children start out by killing neighborhood pets.
Enough with these lunatics that own these aggressive dogs!

dogs belong on chains or in the house, with NO chance of escaping. owners fault not the dogs. ANY dog will fight if provoked or scared.

FINALLY! A decision made with common sense. This is clearly the result of poor ownership on both sides. None of the dogs should have been able to wonder or run off of their own property to begin with.

I feel bad for the owners of Leo. It's sad the dog died. This could have been prevented if Leo's owners had their dogs on leashes. There is a leash law in this county, and Zeus was just protecting his territory, as any dog does. It's a sad story.

Owner of Zeus. First my deepest sympathy goes out to Michael and his family for the loss of Leo. Secondly, to clear one thing up to the media, per sheriff's report, Zeus was in my yard when Leo and Max came out of their home. They came over here.
