Clinton, Giuliani lead big in California poll

CALIFORNIA

Presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Rudy Giuliani dominate in a survey of Californians. The Field Poll of likely primary voters was conducted Aug. 3-12. California holds its primary earlier than ever this year, on Feb. 5.

Democrats:

Hillary Rodham Clinton, 49 percent

Barack Obama, 19 percent

John Edwards, 10 percent

(all others below 4 percent)

Republicans:

Rudy Giuliani, 35 percent

Mitt Romney, 14 percent

Fred Thompson, 13 percent

John McCain, 9 percent

(all others below 4 percent)

WASHINGTON

GOP retirements pile up, pose challenge

A rash of retirements among House Republicans is adding to the party's electoral challenges and raising questions about a rush for the exits. Four House members - Rep. Dennis Hastert and Rep. Ray LaHood, both of Illinois; Rep. Deborah Pryce of Ohio; and Rep. Charles Pickering of Mississippi - have said in recent days they will not run again, worrying GOP leaders anxious to hold back a potential wave of exits after the loss of their majority. "I think our party's chances for winning the majority back next time are pretty bleak at the moment,," LaHood said.
