COUNTYWIDE

As children head back to school Tuesday, local police and firefighters will fan out to help children get to school safely. In Clearwater, firefighters will be stationed at Eisenhower Elementary, South Ward Elementary and John F. Kennedy Middle schools to help children cross the road safely before and after school. On both Tuesday and Wednesday, Clearwater traffic enforcement teams will be on motorcycles and in unmarked cars in school zones and along bus routes. The team will be looking for violations of school zone speed limits, failure to stop for school buses and safety belt violations. During the first three days of school in Largo, fire engines, with lights flashing, will warn motorists to take care at Belcher, Fuguitt , Mildred Helms, Ponce de Leon, Ridgecrest and High Point schools. The speed limit is 15 mph in school zones during arrival and dismissal times. Drivers must stop for school buses with red flashing lights in both directions if there is no raised median on the street or highway. Drivers on the same side of buses must always stop.
