Tennis classes set to start next week

BROOKSVILLE
The city of Brooksville Recreation Department will offer tennis classes at Bud McKethan Park Tennis Center, 800 John Gary Grubbs Blvd.
Beginner classes for ages 6-12 will be 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays, Aug. 27-Dec. 17. Super drills will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
A tennis strategy class for singles and doubles will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 29-Dec. 19.

SPRING HILL
Dixie softball signups set Aug. 29, Sept. 6
The Spring Hill Dixie Girls Fastpitch Softball League will hold signups for ages 5-18 from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 29 and Sept. 6 at Delta Woods Park on Deltona Boulevard.
The cost is $55 per player. A copy of the birth certificate will be required at registration.
Fall season practice and games will be from September through November. All games will be at the new girls softball fields at Anderson Snow Park's sports complex on Anderson Snow Road.

Book group to discuss novel set in India
The Spring Hill Book Discussion Group will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Spring Hill Branch/Harold G. Zopp Memorial Library, 9220 Spring Hill Drive.
The book to be discussed is The God of Small Things, written by Arundhati Roy. The book tells the story of love and caste in a tiny river town in tropical southwest India.
The novel won the Booker Prize in Britain in 1997. Copies are available at the library. Call Jeanne Del Vecchio, 754-4866.

Red Cross classes offered in September
Hernando County Recreation will offer the following American Red Cross certification classes:
- Adult, Infant and Child CPR, 5:30 to 10 p.m. Sept. 11. This class does not include first aid certification. No recertification will be allowed, as new material will be used in this course. The cost is $35, which includes a book and face shield. Registration and prepayment is required.
- Standard First Aid Certification, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12. The cost is $25. A certification card is provided upon completion of the course, which will be valid for three years. Registration is required.
The instructor for both courses is Linda Christian. The classes will be at the Community Activity Center, 205 E Fort Dade Ave. For information or registration, call 754-4031.
Arc seeks sponsors for annual campout
The Arc Nature Coast is seeking sponsors and donations for the annual campout at Lakewood Retreat, which will be Oct. 17-19.
Sponsors are needed for the following: kettle corn (three needed) at $15 each; hay rides (two needed) for $35 each; ice cream social (four needed) at $35 per 10-person group; campfire and S'mores sponsor, $35; scholarship for a day camper is $30; and a scholarship for an overnight camper is $120.
All sponsors will have their company/organization name printed on all the T-shirts that will be distributed to campers, volunteers and staff (about 100 T-shirts).
The annual program offers horseback riding, arts and crafts, a country western day, games and a variety of other activities for developmentally disabled campers.

Citizen's Academy to start Oct. 11
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for the next Citizen's Academy, which will be offered on Thursdays, Oct. 11 through Nov. 15. An afternoon session will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. and an evening session from 6 to 9 p.m.
The Citizen's Academy gives participants an insider's view of the Sheriff's Office and the criminal justice system. Throughout the six-week course, participants will observe demonstrations by K-9 handlers, receive tours of the Sheriff's Office and learn facts and about forensics, uniform patrol, traffic unit, administration, investigations, vice and narcotics, communications/911, aviation and marine units, mounted patrol and legal issues and perspectives.
Graduates will have an option of riding along with a patrol deputy, flying in the helicopter or observing in the communications center.

Back to school notary service is offered
AAA is offering free back to school notary service for parents through Sept. 30. In Hernando County, the AAA office is at 1410 Pinehurst Drive in Spring Hill.
Membership to AAA is not required. Parents can bring in documentation for sports, functions, field trip permission slips and other school-related documents. Call 683-3446.
Library system plans preschool storytime
The Hernando County Public Library System will offer the Preschool Storytime program for children ages 3-5 from the week of Sept. 10 through the week of Oct. 15 at the following locations:
- 11 a.m. Tuesdays, East Hernando Branch Library, 6457 Windmere Road, Ridge Manor West, east of Brooksville.
- 10 a.m. Thursdays, Spring Hill Branch/Harold G. Zopp Memorial Library, 9220 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill.
- 10 a.m. Fridays, West Hernando/Staffordene T. Foggia Branch Library, 6335 Blackbird Ave., Spring Hill.
