Noncandidate Gingrich pools money

WASHINGTON While not a declared presidential candidate, Newt Gingrich's policy organization is raising and spending money in campaign-like proportions but outside of federal political funding restrictions. American Solutions for Winning the Future collected about $526,000 in July and spent about $313,000, according to the foundation's filing with the Internal Revenue Service. The foundation is classified as a "527," after the tax code it is listed under, and makes its required filings to the IRS rather than to the Federal Elections Commission. The fundraising by American Solutions was reported Wednesday by the Politico, a political newspaper. Gingrich has insisted that he is not campaigning for president. An "exploratory committee" set up for Fred Thompson, another official noncandidate, is also a "527." LANSING, MICH. State Senate votes to move primary contest The Michigan Senate voted Wednesday to move the state's presidential nomination contests to Jan. 15, further roiling a turbulent nomination schedule. The Michigan House must still pass the measure, and approval is far from certain. EDWARDS CAMPAIGN: Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards said Wednesday he won't let his party's efforts to control the primary calendar dictate where he campaigns. The Democratic National Committee has threatened to punish states that jump too far ahead in the schedule and any candidates who campaign in those states. Elsewhere BUSH GUEST DIES: An 81-year-old houseguest suffered a fatal heart attack at the summer home in Maine of former President George Bush. John C. Jansing, the husband of Bush's cousin Shelley Bush Jansing, was hospitalized in Biddeford late Tuesday, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. MISSING E-MAILS: The Justice Department contended Tuesday that the White House Office of Administration is not subject to the Freedom of Information Act. The department's argument is in response to a lawsuit trying to force the office to reveal what it knows about the disappearance of White House e-mails.
