TAMPA — Megachurch pastors Randy and Paula White stood before their congregation Thursday night and made the announcement that many in their flock feared had been coming for months.
They are divorcing.
"It is the most difficult decision that I have had to make in my entire life," said the Rev. Randy White, 49. "I take full responsibility for a failed marriage -100 percent. I don't blame Paula, and I don't blame other parties. But as the man of the house, I take full responsibility for that."
He praised his wife, calling her an exceptional woman and a great preacher and wife.
Standing by his side and appearing to fight back tears, the Rev. Paula White called the decision to divorce "one of the most painful of our lives."
"But God always comes to you in the dark places of life," White said, standing beside her husband in the pulpit.
White, 41, also offered a note of optimism.
"It's not the end of the story for Randy or Paula or maybe even Randy and Paula," she said.
The couple, who have both been married and divorced before, did not say what caused their breakup. They also did not detail if they had filed for divorce. They have grown children from previous relationships but none together.
Word about trouble in the couple's marriage has circulated for months. The Whites' disparate ministry paths have fueled much of the concern. Randy White, a bishop at Without Walls International Church, has been spending time in Malibu, Calif., in hopes of establishing a ministry on the West Coast. Paula White, the church's senior pastor and a sought-after televangelist, keeps an apartment in New York City, where she recently opened a new ministry and self-help center in July.
The couple, arguably the most prominent evangelical partners in the state, said they made their announcement at Thursday night's service to tell their church "family" before word of their separation appears in the local and national media.
The Whites' split calls into question the future of the 22,000 member megachurch, which the couple founded as South Tampa Christian Center in 1991. During their announcement, which came just before the sermon, the Whites sought to put those concerns to rest.
Randy White said he would continue to lead Without Walls and would focus on being a "great pastor" and a "great dad."
Paula White said she would also continue to preach at Without Walls when invited by her husband. She also said Paula White Ministries would continue to be based in Tampa.
Several hundred Without Walls members were in the audience for the announcement. As the Whites spoke, some people in the crowd cried. Others appeared stunned, noticeable by the audible gasps in the cavernous sanctuary.
Warming herself outside the church, one woman said "God knows best," before being told by another member to avoid talking to the media. At least one Without Walls member said the church was hurting and lashed out at a reporter for being on site to witness the announcement.
The church broadcasts its services via the Internet at www.streamingfaith.com. But last night's announcement was not aired. The video of the broadcast was interrupted without explanation and resumed after the announcement.
Inside the church, the preacher for the evening, the Rev. Tim Storey, sought to offer direction to a stunned congregation.
"How many of you feel sorrow tonight," Storey asked the crowd.
Hands shot up around the sanctuary.
"We should. But God is still good."

it is a disgrace. there seems to be no Biblical basis for the divorce. this is the second for both. as Christians, with the Lord's help you learn to work through things. this is an easy way out and a cop out. it is a poor testimony to their ministry.

None of us know the full story, so we don't have room to pass judgment. Let those without sin cast the first stone...I thought so! None of us can. However I will say that there are tooo many clergy repeatedly divorcing; something's wrong here........

This just shows that Satan is EVERYWHERE seeking EVERYONE he can devour. Always seek God FIRST. He'll provide everything else. If you are too BUSY, (even in serving God) to seek God, the devil's gonna enter in. WATCH OUT!

Shocking! I feel they owe their 'family' more than an announcement. They have literally invaded our lives with lifesaving messages of hope and encouragement, especially Paula. They should explain what went wrong and trust us to support them anyhow.

May the Lord Jesus Christ help us all. Jesus is not suprised by our sins and failure to represent Him. He is still calls "Come unto me all you that labor and are heavy laden, and you shall find rest unto your souls." Our souls need to rest in Jesus.

It seems God is purging the TV preachers. It started with Richard and Lindsey Roberts and it keeps on going like the energizer bunny. God help us and God please continue to reveal to the body of Christ any wrong doing by these TV preachers!

Surely this is not fruit of the Holy Spirit. Surely as the scripture says' what has started out in the Spirit has now ended in Flesh.Randy & Paula please let Jesus Christ mend your broken marriage. You're accountable to about 30,000 sheeps.

Nothing is worth divorce accept abuse or infidelity. Other than that, "selfishness" which is not a good or godly spirit, will tare up a marraige. Therefore, trust their decision. The silence is to keep the other from looking bad. It's best this way.

Read the Bible! After being freed of demons by Jesus, a man wanted to become a preacher. Instead, Jesus told him to return to his village(home). Now folks with problems(e.g. Paula White)become preachers to build themselves up. She should go home!

I am glad to see the Lord dealing with the Church. We cannot expect to win the lost when the Church is lost. Ministry has become a show anymore. If we ever really experience the anointing and presence of Jesus, no one will be standing.

My heart is saddened to read and hear about a man and woman of God deciding again to take he world way of dealing with their issue(s). The world is hurting and majority appears to be doing what is right in their own eyes. God help the preachers.

its quite sorrowful that great people of God like the whites are divorcing.
I dont know when divorce became an option for christian marriages but bible only certifies divorce when one is caught cheating or else any indifferences can be solved.

Both of you (now divoiced) still have enough grace to come together again. though the bush burnt, it wasnt consumed. The problem is not just the divoice but your congregation and the future. Some will fall because of your divoice. I'll pray 4 u.

The bible says a woman should not speck in church, lead in prayers, teach or have authority over men (1Corinthians 14:33-34,1Timothy 2:8-15).They like so many others were on a wrong footing ab initio.they were bound to end and be uprooted that way.

This really hurts the body of Christ. I strongly plead with all to please pray for them and all other instruments of the Almighty God as such are targets for the enemy. The name of our God can NEVER be jeopardised for he is forever GOD. Shallom!

If Satan cannot hold you back from doing your work with the ministry, he will push you forward where you are working all the time; getting no rest and inflating your ego where you think this ministry is your doing. It is not - God does the building.

Why are we surpised? Christians are not super human beings. The fault lays in holding them to an unattainable standard. Just because one knows better doesn't mean that they do better.

Paula and Randy have failed their congregation and all those around the world who look up to them. As leaders, they have to be transparent. Tell us why you are divorcing. You can't say you will continue to preach when you are not transparent.
