For their own good Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Five reasons the high school preseason buries the NFL preseason
1. The prep preseason lasts only one game.
2. In prep exhibition games, the starters play a lot more than one or two series.
3. Prep fans aren't charged regular-season ticket prices. At most places tonight, it's $4.
4. Most, if not all, of tonight's participants are playing as if the game counts.
5. Nobody on a high school roster will be holding out tonight for a new contract.

A look at tonight's preseason matchups
If area football programs were to sponsor free giveaways tonight, cubic zirconium would be the most fitting complimentary handout. This evening's preseason kickoff classics, after all, aren't the real thing; fact is, we expect to see a lot of teams play their junior varsity kids in the second half. Still, it's football, and many games feature some key storylines, if not stakes. Here then, is an overview of tonight's preseason slate.
All start at 7:30 p.m.
Tonight's top matchups
Armwood at Lakeland Lake Gibson
Both teams reached the third round of the playoffs last year (Armwood in Class 4A; Lake Gibson in 5A). A great opportunity for new Armwood quarterback Mywan Jackson to get snaps against a quality foe before next week's showdown with Plant.
Jesuit at Chamberlain, airs on Catch 47
Perhaps the best matchup involving two county teams. The Chiefs are banged up in the secondary, which the Tigers' newfound passing attack might be inclined to exploit.
Plant at Wharton
At long last, we get to see ballyhooed first-year Plant quarterback Aaron Murray in a game involving more than seven players to one side.
Lakeland at Hillsborough
Granted, the Dreadnaughts won't be contending for any mythical national titles this season, but they're still Lakeland. Hillsborough may as well get used to quality competition, because its schedule won't get much easier from here.
Gaither at Durant
Arguably the second-best matchup featuring two local teams. We're pretty high on Durant, which returns a ton of experience from last year's 4-6 team, but fleet Cowboys tailback Jarvis Giles could spoil that high.
The rest of the slate
Blake at Boca Ciega, Bloomingdale at Riverview
Sickles at Brandon, King at East Bay
Freedom at Zephyrhills, Titusville Astronaut at Jefferson
Newsome at Lennard, Leto at Spoto, Gibbs at Middleton
Plant City at Tampa Bay Tech, Tampa Catholic at Robinson
Berkeley Prep at Northside Christian
Five comeback kids
(These guys missed most of last season for various reasons.)
1. QB Aaron Murray, Plant. In addition to backing up Robert Marve, Murray played safety for the Panthers until suffering a torn labrum in the third game of the 2006 season.
2. RB Andrew Philbert, Newsome. The diminutive (5-foot-5) senior played three games last year before breaking his ankle, then missed most of spring drills with bone chips in the same ankle.
3. DE Max Holloway, Jefferson. A broken wrist limited this rangy senior from playing defense last season. Now he's getting Division I looks on that side of the ball.
4. LB/SS Jairus Jones, Wharton. Okay, Jones - arguably the Wildcats' best defensive prospect - played last year, but missed spring drills after undergoing surgery to repair bone chips in his shoulder.
5. DB Marvin Dexter, Durant. This Cougars junior, projected to be one of the team's defensive standouts, sat out last season to focus on academics.
NCS VS B. PREP. I saw it all B. Prep. was amped. NCS was just too much for for them. B. Prep. just got out coached and there boys weren't ready to go the distance!By the way, why did B. Prep. head coach not shake hands at the end of the game?!
