Warner: Send signal with troop withdrawal

WASHINGTON - Republican Sen. John Warner said Thursday that President Bush should start bringing home some troops by Christmas to show the Baghdad government that the U.S. commitment in Iraq is not open-ended.

Warner said the troop withdrawals are needed because Iraqi leaders have failed to make substantial political progress, despite an influx of U.S. troops this year.

The departure of even a small number of U.S. troops - perhaps 5,000 out of the 160,000 troops in Iraq - would send a strong message that time was running out, Warner said.

"We simply cannot as a nation stand and continue to put our troops at continuous risk of loss of life and limb without beginning to take some decisive action," Warner, R-Va., said.

Warner is a former Navy secretary and one-time chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

I certainly agree that our troops should be withdrawn but if we only withdraw 5,000 then the others will be put in more danger. I say we should withdraw ALL troops.

The real problem that nobody seems to recognize is that there are elements in the Iraqi government that want constant turmoil, and want to see democracy in Iraq fail. It's time to start replacing some of these leaders. This will never work as is.
