Scary stories

Three of last year's top-selling tales of horror are now available in paperback.

Lisey's Story (Pocket) by Stephen King is a moving portrait of the widow of a successful novelist struggling to cope with his death, but it has plenty of King's trademark bone-rattling terror, too.

The Ruins (Vintage) by Scott Smith charged up bestseller lists after a rave review from King, who called its harrowing story of American tourists lost in the jungles of Mexico "one long, screaming close-up."

Hannibal Rising (Dell) by Thomas Harris is the prequel (released concurrently with the film version) to Harris' other three novels about the sinister Hannibal Lecter, focusing on how a promising young lad ends up as a cannibal.
