Leaders from around the state met in Largo Sunday to discuss long-term goals for Florida's future.
The Century Commission for a Sustainable Florida will meet again this morning to continue that conversation and identify priorities. Figures at the roundtable included St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker, Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina and Lula Butler of Delray Beach.
"Our job is to envision a long-term vision for Florida," said Steve Seibert, executive director of the commission.
Much of Sunday's discussion focused on water policy and a report given by consultant Melissa Meeker, "Water Resources Management for 2050."
Meeker suggested that a number of interests needed to be brought together to discuss the issue in greater depth. Kirby Green, a water management district director, agreed.
"It's time we have this discussion," he said. "It's time we have this discussion at a state level."
Commission members said maybe their body could get the conversation started.
Seibert said it would help that the commission didn't have an "entrenched interest" on the matter. Given all the parties involved, "there are many obstacles to reaching consensus."
The Century Commission was created in 2005 by the state Legislature. Its purpose is to develop a vision of Florida for the next 25 and 50 years, brainstorming ideas and bringing different groups together.
The commission issues a report to the Legislature and governor each January.
