Sophomore Alyssa Gorrell, 19, left, and senior Jenny Dum, 22, both environmental science majors, chat during a science lab Monday. The college has launched a new graduate program in environmental science and policy.

Classes began Monday at USF St. Petersburg with what school officials say is a record enrollment in graduate programs.

Student admissions to the MBA program in the college of business are up 74 percent, from 31 to 54 students. The journalism and media studies program admitted 21 students, the largest class in its history.

A new lecture series in cooperation with Progress Energy will kick off in October on topics that will link issues of energy and the environment.

Environmental science students will attend a newly launched graduate program in environmental science and policy, the first new degree USF St. Petersburg will offer since achieving separate accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges of Schools.

And in June, the university plans to break ground on a new science and technology general academic facility for general science and marine science students. The new, state-funded building will add 20 percent more classrooms to the campus.
